Fly Boy Aviation Disc Golf

I just got back today from my Flyboy trip and... im in love!! This will be a yearly trip for me now! Anyone who loves disc golf, go here now!!!

I played at Flyboy about a month ago, all the great things you hear about this place are true, if you haven't played here, you should!!! (schedule in advance with Kelly). Kelly, and his family are great people and amazing hosts, and like others have said, they treat everyone as honored guests.

There is no fee if you are just coming to play the course. However, donations are accepted, and i would encourage everyone to give generously in appreciation for the hard work that has went into building such a great disc golf experience. It will take 4-5hrs to play, including a scheduled 30min lunch break near hole 20. Kelly's mother, Lillian, prepares lunches for the players for a small $5 fee (fresh sandwich, chips, brownie, and drink). I did not stay in the B&B, but Kelly gave us the grand tour, and it was very nice.

I got to play the course with Kelly, Phil Arthur, and Phil's daughter, what a treat! Phil is a phenominal player, but also very humble and kind. Despite beig the lowest ranked player in the group, and having to throw 2 times to get out to Phil's tee shots all day long, and not having a good putting day, Phil and Kelly were both very patient and encouraging, never did i feel rushed or hurried. It isn't everyday that you get to see someone throw past the basket on a 530ft hole. It was great to see the course from the designers perspective, as well as a PDGA pro's perspective, and to see how different the course plays between the 3 levels of players that we had.

Kelly sent me an article that he wrote which talks about Flyboy, and how it all got started, it is evident from this article that Flyboy Aviation has much more to offer than just a world-class disc golf course, please take time to read it (Click HERE to read the article).

*starts planning trip to Georgia*
...
*realizes that its not likely any time soon*
...
*sigh*

All of this is making me really want to play this course. I wish I was closer.

Thanks for that article tamahawk, that was a great read

No problem! I thought it was a really great story of how the course began, but it is also nice to see, from Kelly's perspective, that Flyboy is more than just disc golf, it is as much about the people as it is anything.

You will not be disappointed when you get to make it to Whitesburg to experience Flyboy for yourself, pictures and words do not do it justice.

Great course, hate to hear that its going more under the radar... At least I live sort of close. I hope tournaments are still a possibility in the future

Thanks for the link Tamahawk. I'm going down there on Saturday to play (hope the rain holds off). Can't wait to check it out.

Just saw that FlyBoy is now listed as an extinct course.
Also, I've tried finding the B&B so that I can line up a visit. Google links me up to this site and Facebook. The FB page has a link to some travel site, but that travel site says that the FlyBoy link is expired.
I'm hoping to stay at the B&B and play a round. If anyone has any insight, please feel free to post and/or PM me.
Thanks -

Interesting about it being extinct. The best way to first make contact with them is thru email. You can get Kelly's email on the DGCR Flyboy page. He'll get back to ya and give you some more info for what you're looking for.

Good bye Flyboy

Did anyone have the chance to read Kelly's(flyboys last) review of Flyboy before it got pulled? I did and it read like a good bye letter. It looks like he wants to focus on other things besides the course. I got the imporession that people he knows will be able to play there still but I also got the impression that the amont of people that will get a chance to play there will drop considerably since he isnt always going to be there to play a round with.

I'm local to ATL and have had the privilege to experience Flyboy a ton of times. Kelly and the gang out there are remarkable stewards of life in general and the disc golf out there was always a secondary pleasure.

I've played some great courses as well and Flyboy is out of this world. Blue Ribbon Pines in MN is fantastic too though!

Thanks again Kelly and the gang, I hope I can continue to play Flyboy from time to time!

I am fortunate to have been one of the last unknown passers-by to have had the privilege of staying at the B&B with my family and then playing. Seeing the location of the course and the constraint of having to have visitors escorted I am blown away that Kelly did not make this move much sooner. Thank you Kelly for your over-the-top hospitality to me and my family and to all of us for extending yourself so far to provide so much for us!

Noooooo! Literally just last night I realized Flip City was close enough to Atlanta that I could play it on my visit to the South this Spring. Hopefully the with a heads up a ways out my girlfriend and I can do the bed and breakfast and play the course.

People that advocate against pay to play need to take note of what happened here. He should seriously be charging at least $30 a round, or whatever it takes to be able to afford to hire someone to do maintenance and guide the course for him. The fact that even the #1 course in the country, and probably the world, isn't profitable enough to be a worthwhile businesses venture is a damn shame.

I better stop ranting now before I get all emotional. Thank you Kelly for all the sacrifices you've made in running this course and I really hope someday I will get the opportunity to meet you and throw on your little slice of heaven.

Wow ... can't say I blame him with the time commitment. A truly amazing course and amazing people.

Super glad I fit time in on Saturday to play apparently one of the last "casual" (for lack of a better word) rounds out there.

I start reading this and "Desperado" comes on the radio. How fitting.

I'm not sure what the future is, but I'm glad I got to play this gem.

Really saddened to hear this. I guess I should have played this course since it was in my home state:wall::doh::(

You're welcome!, the course is amazing, hope the weather is good, but either way, it is definitely worth the experience.
