So how far will you go to find a lost disc?

I am not cheap. I know disc's aren't really that expensive. But I always have the mind set "Leave No Disc Behind!" When playing by myself, I will look until I find a lost disc. When playing with a group, I will spend no more than five minutes looking, but go back later to find it.

Yesterday, while playing in the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Meet at Hawk Hollow, I lost my Ion in the creek on hole 8. Now this isn't just any creek. As anyone who knows Hawk Hollow, the course is home to many cows. These cows use this creek for many things, if you know what I mean. I had already fallen into this creek retrieving my drive that hit a tree and landed in the creek and did not smell all that good getting out.

Still being wet, my approach slipped out of my hand and skipped into the creek. Four of us saw it go in, but none of us could find it. Prerube and I went back later that night with flash lights, but still could not find it.

I gave up hope this morning and figured I would 'offer' this disc to the Disc Golf Gods and went home.

I now know Prerube is of the same mind set!

I just received a message from him. After I left, he took a swim, and found my disc trapped under a log in the creek! Prerube is a stand up guy. I will pay him back somehow.

So how far will you go to find a disc?

i've never done anything that intense, but yes i will look for my disc until i find it. did have to give up once because the sun went down, got a call a few days later from someone who found it

:clap::clap: Here's to Prerube... that's a standup friend.

I'm not quite of that mindset anymore, but I used to be. Stripped down to my skivvies and was thigh deep in nasty slimy water on the 18th hole of the Monster at Hudson Mills looking for a Champ Sidewinder - not a pretty sight (in more ways than one). Found a Z-Flash, Star Destroyer and a DX Leopard, but no Champ Sidewinder, so I can't really complain :\
...but I'm never wading into crud like that again. :gross:

Sometimes, you just gotta know when to cut your losses. Not worth risking injury for an easily replaceable commodity.

So the question should be How far will you go for someone else's disc :)

ok, the funny part of the story is the first time he throws the disc it goes into the water. He falls into the water trying to get it, throws it again and it goes in the water :D

I saw it go in, so we briefly looked during the game, we looked again with spot lights at night, then I found it by going into the water after he left. I really wanted to find this for him. kind of like a Karma repayment for when Lakebodom found my disc in Rochester NY with no ink and still shipped it back to me. I am known for jumping into icy water for other people's plastic. I am a very good golden retreiver :)

I built a $20 lake rake just to get my champ wraith back. However, that investment will hopefully pay off tomorrow when I attempt to get my Star SL back from the same water hole.

I also stomped around in a disgusting muck hole at Barnett Park for 30 minutes up to my thighs because my girlfriend tossed her brand new pink champion valkyrie in it even though she had a Dragon in her bag. The hole was only like 15' X 30' and maybe 3' deep at most, but it was super gross. I kept thinking I'd step on broken glass or get bit by a snake, but eventually, I found it.

Way to go prerube!

All that aside, I've never lost one of my discs myself, some idiot I know threw the first disc I ever found into the pond on hole 15 at Old Farm (champion beast). I was pretty mad at him, but he walked around in the pond for an awesome 30 seconds, and didn't find it. I wasn't expecting him to find it, he's like 4 feet tall, and if he woulda waded out any farther he woulda drowned, and I wouldn't have waded in for him....leave him to the fate of my beast :p

I'm joking about that very last part. But I did search for my dyed Avenger SS for damn near 45 minutes one time, and as mad as I got, I WASN'T going to give up, and I eventually found it wedged between a tree and bush.

If it's a heavy use disc I'll search like crazy. If I've been having problems with the disc I'll give it 5 minutes and say screw it.

The most I've ever searched was when I turned over an Excalibur way in the middle of a shallow but murky lake (I was just learning to throw FH.) After the round I got my duck hunting waders, my buddie's fishing boat, and some rakes for combing and prodding the bottom and returned to search for about an hour. Unfortunately all I found was a 150 DX destroyer. On the plus side it was a disc my uncle rarely used anyway so I gave him money for a new disc of his choice.

il definitely swim for plastic, within reason. way to pay it forward!

NotBOB, you look drunk as F in that picture. I was in the water today and found a glowie from Texas and a beat valk with aces, both had dead cell numbers which is often the case. I go in the very most frightening water for plastic.

I did not even know the owners of these discs :)

Prerube has recovered many discs for me after i had given up. It's a shame we forgot to go look for 2 of VonDrehles discs. Maybe we'll find those when we play the Hawk Hollow Open in three weeks.

We fished several discs out of that creek at Hawk Hallow this weekend. It can impact 12 of the 18 holes. Chased one down the creek as it was floating away. Unforunately we did loose one on hole 10 - heard it hit the foot bridge but could not find it anywhere.

I've waded around in the pond at the Dahlgren course a couple times, feeling around the water lillies. Took two different search attempts to find one disc. I usually find extras.

I have not lost any discs - since Jrawk / Prerube found my leopard that I lost at HH a couple month ago. Skipped it past the basket into the creek, while the cows were there stirring up the mud.

I jumped in after Monococy's Ion on another hole and was able to get it back to him while he was on hole 7. I threw it to him (yeah yeah practice throw my arse) and I was telling him, "you need to go more to the left" I did not see my double's partner was putting and I think he thought I was telling him to aim to the left...oops

:hfive: That's above and beyond anything I've ever seen!

It all started several years ago. I was playing with a group of close friends at Como in Buffalo, NY. one friend threw his only ace disc in the water and another one threw in an old protostar birdie. They debated about going in and it since I like a fast paced game I made a decision to jump in the water in my underwear. I got both discs, plus a raven from the group before us and the group behind me asked me to stay in the water while they played through and I swam out and got the dragon that the guy shanked. On the way out of the water I kept feeling plastic on my feet and pulled out 11 more with no names or numbers.

There's a bum who hangs around Cliff Stephens DGC (which has lots of water, and sometimes even alligators) who swims for discs. It's how he makes his "living." He'll retrieve a lost disc, but you have to pay him a few bucks to get it back. Otherwise he tries to sell them elsewhere.

Prerube found a disc at Am Worlds in Rochester this year. Turned out to be a guy I play with at leagues every week. Murph couldn't believe he was getting back his favorite disc.

I tanked my first-ever disc in the creek on #13 at Will Rogers (Oklahoma City) and didn't even think about going in after it. That creek is basically an open sewer with all sorts of sharp-edged metal parts half-buried in the bottom muck, used needles floating around and so forth. There is some kid who dives there for plastic, but I understand he goes in full Kevlar ...
