Brainwave-Like Disc Dyeing

So..... now to move on to what I thought was the prettiest.... this was originally a pearly looking Pro Valkyrie for the Mrs. It actually has some green, blue, and pink spots (as well as some purple). The camera didn't really have enough light to capture all of the color. Way better looking in person.

-Sorry for the giant pic.

And finally.....

This was a darker yellow star-ish JLS for the Mrs. Came out pretty awesome... and reminiscent of some of Jeff's green discs.

Next on the agenda.... a white ESP Buzzz and a white star SL.

Okay this seems to be what we want, but now we need the colors to pop more.

The colors do "pop" on the valk.... just doesn't really show in the photo.... guess I need more light. I am also guessing that heating the disc up first is a good idea. If you look at some of Jeff's pics on facebook he has an "aha" moment at some point and gets some super vibrant discs in champ/z. He mentioned that he had finally had a lightbulb moment in the comments on one of the photos.

Congrats goose, I think the ingredients question has been solved, now it looks to be getting the "experience" downpat. That Pro Valk turned out better than any pro plastic I have tried. They always fail with me.......

Is it me or do these not have the sharpness to the Dan and Jeff waves?

How do they get the color to pop!?

I was going for the thicker waves... I am guessing that heating the disc first and then applying more pressure would get more of the "pop" effect and smaller waves.

Maybe the lightbulb moment was literally a lightbulb. What if you kept a heat lamp near the disc to keep them warm while the dye is on?

I am just using the heat from a blow dryer every once in awhile. I think the main key is for the disc to be warm to begin with and to use bright white discs to get the brightest colors.

Looks like you guys cracked it. What an amazing detective story. :)

Good job to all who contributed, big or small.

Whats next? :)

Just a thought. To keep the dye moist while you are letting your dye sit. I have a large pan with a lid that I use when I paint with laundry detergent to keep the dye moist. I put a splash of water in the bottom and let it sit in the pan. The water keeps the dye moist enough to allow the dye to absorb easier. Caution! To much water will make the dye run. I'm sure a tupperware container or something like that would work as well. I've never found the need to add heat. It actually has been counter productive. Moisture is the key.

Here are the ingredients in Punky Colour. I noticed that glycerin is the 2nd ingredient. I wonder if that would help with the lighter masked brainwaves.
