2014 United States Disc Golf Championship

Yeah I was thinking about the caddybook images. I wonder if they change those images every year. I still think it would be neat to see if those changed. And then compare the changes to the outcomes recorded year to year.

What happened to the payout for this event? In another thread, Chuck posted the results from the 2001 USDGC, and Barry got $8,000. That was 13 years ago and higher than Brinster's earnings from last year.

Half the field (performance flight) is no longer paying into the Open prize pool. And I'm guessing Innova cut back it's added cash as well. That was part of the reason for creating the Performance flight in 2011.

I have the '05 and '06 books. You can maybe get those and others from the internet archive and/or Innova.

Throwback Thursday: 2005 was the last year of the Clown's Mouth:

Also, 888 played straight that year, instead of crossing over to the island.

Last year they did a mix of rules depending on the design of the hole. I would expect the same this year with perhaps a few tweaks where last year's rules didn't work as well as intended.

The positions of the OB ropes/strings have been tweaked from year to year; few would be obvious if you overlay caddybook images (changes would get lost within the scale). I've helped lay the rope/string for the past 3-4 years and have noticed some differences.

For instance, on hole 9 there was almost no OB from the baseball field wall (only a foot or so) in 2012; in 2013 the OB line was moved about 4-5 feet from the wall, which really increased the OB opportunities. Many other minor changes.

Yea...schusterick's 2010 win brought him $12,000

The caddy book is available here.

Some notes:

  • Hazard rules once apply once again
  • Hole 5's tee has moved to a dock forcing players to tee off over the water.
  • The triple mando is back on 7.
  • A second pin position has been added to 8.
  • A second pin position on 13 means that 888 will be 803 on Thurs and Fri

I want to get better at disc golf just so I can compete in this tournament. I've been watching videos of past USDGCs and some of the documentary style films. So much prestige in competing and doing well at the USDGC.

Randomly noticed the stats for Hole 5 in the caddy book from 2013 open flight:

Double - 5%
Bogey - 8%
Par - 41%
Birdie - 45%
Eagle - McBeth

amazing

What year did #12 turn into a par 4? Did they just change the par or was the design modified too?

Looks like the design was changed a bit from when it was a par 5. The tee and basket are in the same place, but the OB/hazard areas have been tweaked. The area between the tee and the sidewalk used to be entirely OB, now it looks like you can come up short of crossing the sidewalk and be in bounds.

But I imagine the par change has much more to do with scoring average than anything physical. It has always been the easiest par 5 to birdie. There have probably been enough birdies and eagles recorded to drop the average score enough to call it a challenging par 4 instead of a relatively easy par 5.

They changed it to a par 4 last year. No design changes. The hole is a relatively easy 4 and a gettable 3 for most of the top pros so it didn't make sense having it as a par 5.
