Can you be a noodle arm and be rated 1000? What's the magic distance needed to be a 1000 rated player? Some people think you need 450ft of distance, while others might think much less as long as you can park 250-300ft upshots. We'll assume all of them can putt. ;)

Anyone know 1000 rated players that don't have "elite" distance? Any 1000 rated players throwing 350 max d?

Probably depends most on what area you live in. If you live in a place with, and play lots of tournaments on, long open courses, you probably need to throw a lot farther than someone who is really good at 350-400ft tunnel shots and plays woody course events.

I picked 450'. Of course being accurate is more important than max distance & putting trumps all. I think a 1000 rated player should be able to break 400' with such ease & accuracy that 450' is in the arsenal. If you would want to compete on the Pro Tour with those kinds of courses than 450' is a necessity.

So I only have to gain 75' with accuracy, and figure out my putting issues, and then I can go pro?

I bet 400' if the rest of your game was really really solid and it's not those championship level golf course layouts. It's just there are some shots and holes you can't really birdie or have to throw a really flexed out line or roller, so you have to make your other chances count all the time. I bet at 450' it would be significantly easier, especially considering you would be throwing mids 350+ very easily. I don't think I'd call it elite distance until it's 525'+ consistently and easily, seems like a lot of top pro's have 450-500' distance all the time....just going by tourney footage.

This, in all likelihood. If you play a lot where 450' doesn't gain you much, your 400' arm can compete well with those 500' arms.

Also worth remembering that "1000-rated" aren't the same as "top pros". The guy without a 450' arm (or perhaps more) may not be able to compete on the pro tour, but he can be a local or regional star. I've known of 1000-rated players whom I doubt could reach 450', but who were extremely accurate and consistent.

Of course, there are a bunch of people with 500' arms who will never reach 1000 rating.

this thread just makes me cry. back to my local course with my friend the Leopard.....

Don't cry Zontar. Very few of us possess the skills needed to become pro. Let me tell you a little story about skill gap. I played in a local tourney that was singles the first round and seeded doubles in the second round. I shot a +27 (22 holes white) in the first round, poor enough that I was seeded with a local pro in the second round. Together, we shot a -6 same course same layout. Enjoy the pros doing things that we can't and remember: Have Fun!

Well what the ish. I've thrown 400 before, but I'm still only a 910.

How far to be 920? That's what i want to know!

... but, to compete on tour, I agree 450 is probably a minimum.

A: 420'

I played with a guy who could bomb 500' drives consistently but couldn't throw 200' to save his life. So distance is cool but it doesn't always add up to being a good golfer.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I know several people with cannons for arms, but they are like young Nolan Ryan...no accuracy. Caveat to that is I would say AT LEAST you need to be able to throw a dead-accurate 350 foot pure hyzer to even sniff 1000-rated, no matter where you live. I picked 450 in the poll, but that's really totally arbitrary.

Having said all that, accurate drives at 400 plus is going to shave many strokes off your score each round. 350 accurate and lights out putting still loses to 450 accurate and close to lights-out putting any day.

Snapper Pierson topped out at 1007. The one time I played with him 15 years ago, I'm guessing his max was 310'ish. He was by far the most accurate thrower I've ever seen.

you need to be throwing the same scores as othr 1000 rated players throw at pdga sanctioned tournaments to be 1000 rated.

the easiest way to do so is to play tournaments where you have the best chance at throwing the same total scores as other 1000 rated players are playing.

1st things its in your best interest to throw tournaments with more 1000 rated player playing.

if you don't have the distance to score as well other huge armed 1000 rated pros on certain courses (example GBO golf course) then you can find courses that you can score as well (maybe shorter wooded courses).

sorry for not directly answering your question but thats the best way.

Hey, Johnny V, wasn't Terry rated 1000 for a while? (Or very close to it?)

I don't think he had that much power, but was an excellent putter back in the day, and I think that's still the strongest part of his game.
