Ulibarri Displays True Sportsmanship

why are we comparing a sport to a card game?
Because "professional" DG is closer in form to poker than ball golf where the DG entry fee is essentially an ante to create the majority of the payout.

so if I follow this analogy, which I agree is flawed, then PU makes his hand in the river when GG spits out....so in response he folds his hand? Ya that doesn't make sense either.

From my perspective, I want to see the sport grow bigger, and pot splitting, not playing your hardest to win, is pretty bush league

Colluding is messed up b/c it doesn't encourage people to play their best and defeats the purpose of competition.

Have you ever played Burlington's Cedarrock course? They baskets were Mach I's with added inner chains. The actual basket had criss-crossed wired to prevent the discs from sliding out the side. It still came out.

It was bad luck.

In your situation Chris I would be a little more sympathetic. I might not make the same decision but agree in your assessment that a certain amount of 'bad luck' came into play.

According to the course page here on DGCR, Veteran's Park has Mach III baskets. Since I started playing I have played primarily on courses with Mach IIs and IIIs. I have no preference as far as baskets go, just speaking from experience. I've seen more spitouts from discs hitting the ring at the bottom of the chains and coming directly back out in a straight line than anything else.

If GG had been putting from farther away, say 60 or 80 feet, and this happened, would Ulibarri have made the same move? From a greater distance the disc is usually traveling at a higher rate of speed, making spitouts and rejections more likely.

If you are putting from 15 feet on a Mach III and hit chains, pole, bottom of the basket and still bounced out then you threw the disc too hard. That's not bad luck, it's the adrenaline getting to you.

Couldn't agree more.....say the entire top card is colluding. This takes alot of pressure off those players, which in turn could lead to less mistakes. This in turn affects the chance of players on the 2nd card, who are playing in a high pressure environment, from getting their shot to move up in the standings

I can't believe people are on here arguing than collusion in the top ranks of our sport is cool.

Uli was on the 2nd card

the baskets at the VPO are not so great, however I don't know what basket bounced out GG.

I can't read this anymore without commenting. I was at this playoff and saw it with my own eyes. How come nobody has commented on the fact that GG returned the favor on the next hole?? GG was parked for his 3 and Uli was there for his 4 and GG clanked his 8 ft putt off the basket to extend it to yet another hole. He then proceeded to park a 550 ft anny in a headwind to seal the deal. It suprised the crowd when Uli did it in the first place but GG returned the favor on the next hole.

The basket in question that GG got spit out of was a temp basket, but it was a very good basket. In fact, it was better than most of the permanant baskets at Veterans park.

damn you Pauly U for wasting our time with this silly discussion. Why didnt you just take the 'win' and split the cash with him in private?

"Colluding" in a first place playoff, which is where it occurs, affects no other players than the ones playing. Only those wagering on the outcome might be affected financially. Note that money for all other tied places is split. So why do we worry that players also choose to split what was a tied position prior to the playoff?

so then why bother with playoffs if this is how they go anyway?

I didn't say it did, I was just confirming that the baskets suck. I've lost like 5 aces out there b/c of them not catching

Tradition. They award two gold medals in the Olympics for ties so it's not that ties need to be broken other than the American tradition of crowning a specific winner.

Yes let's just look at how it affects people monetarily and not what type of message it sends.

Your friend needs to get third or better to qualify for USDGC? Whoops you missed that putt and gave your friend the stroke needed to take third from u.

I was there and watched him do this in person. I have to say the chain out that Double G had was the worst I have seen. I hit the inside of the middle of the basket on the rim of the disc and *bounced* out to the other side. Chain out is not the word for that.

Uli had many many chain outs that day too and felt his pain. He looked over at Double G when he was about to putt and said, "Let's keep playing" and threw it under the basket. Was amazing to see and then allowed us to see Double G throw the best shot I've seen played on hole one at Veteran's.

Whether he should have done it or not isn't in question. To each his own and in that moment, Uli didn't want to win a tournament that way.

You play to win the game!
