Did Discraft Earn Bragging Rights at 2011 Pro Worlds?

Did Discraft Earn Bragging Rights?

They can brag about Nate and Paige winning.
They should be embarrassed that they didn't sponsor Wolrds.

Both Nate and Paige are so talented I give absolutely no credit to their disc sponsor.
I know from talking with some top players that Discraft is a PIA and does not treat their pros that well.
I also know both Nate and Paige could win throwing any manufacturer.
Don't be surprised to see both Discraft and Innova lose pros to L64, Discmania (yes still innova), MVP and Legacy etc...in the future.
I think Nate likes the Rampage........

They have nothing to be embarrassed about.

They sponsor their players better than any disc company.

You have no idea.

I read this but i don't get it. why was discraft supposed to pay for the payouts? isn't worlds a big tourney with big entry fee? 4 days of playing and cash to the winners? i would think the course club does the organizing and not a big disc company. i'm kinda lost in all the flames i couldn't figure out the issue?

I guess I figured that things happened the way they did because worlds were held in innova country. I don't know that I agree with the thought process, but maybe they figured innova had the brand recognition on lock down and they decided they would just save themselves the money?

Personally I think that they should have played a bigger part, just because they are the second largest disc manufacturer in the country. But at the same time they are a for profit company just like innova, and maybe didn't think that they would get the return they were looking for. As much as nobody wants to admit it, there's always going to be a "what's in it for me" component. In a perfect world everybody would sponsor every event in order to grow the sport, but obviously that isn't reality.

Maybe this did indeed come off as too inflammatory...sorry to stir the pot more than I intended. But I was really interested in seeing what people thought, and having outside perspective is good. For sure NorCal has lots of people who've already taken Discraft plastic out of their bags over this perceived snub. I haven't, I really like some of their discs and want to continue using them.

But its tough because disc golf competition at the highest levels is really held back by the fact that our sport can't bring in the big sponsors and dollars. When some of the big companies in our own sport don't even show up, I guess it looks even worse. Of course Discraft sponsors a large number of other events, and has done more for the sport than probably anyone on this board. They've got their feather in their cap.

I think some of us are more disappointed than truly upset. Why does it come to this, that the sport's World Championship can't even get all our own wagons together, at the very least? It doesn't look good, and it certainly doesn't feel right. These should be unifying events that build the sport and inspire unity of purpose...it is not the time to take our toys and go home.

Anyways, this poll was triggered when I received an e-mail from Discraft bragging about their pros winning Worlds. Nate and Paige are phenomenal disc golfers, and I agree that they would have won no matter what plastic they threw. Add to this the impression of Discraft trying to catch wind in their sails from Worlds after having bailed on the event...it just didn't sit right at the moment.

Serious question, did innova sponsor the 2008 worlds, or any of the worlds michigan has hosted?

Now that I'm at home I looked at some 08 swag and didn't see any other manufacters' logos.

Just like local clubs thinking that local beer and restaurant owners should be sponsoring them, etc. My question is why should they? We've had local tourneys that we had a title sponsor, but it never last because the title sponsorship gets nothing back? Disc Golfers rarely support those sponsors and disc golf tournaments are so small in comparisn that it's not worth their dollars? Discraft has their name on the back of some of the top pros so they contributed in that way, and honestly that is much more valuable, and valuable than any title sponsorship would be. Economy sucks right now and money is tight. Advertising dollars have to be maximized. The they should sponsor because they are a disc manufacturer doesn't work in this day in age anymore. They are already doing more than they should imho both Innova, Vibram and Discraft IMHO. They sponsor many other events, (Memorial, AM Nats) which works out in their best interest so I have no ill will towards discraft at all. Sucks, but I understand their point also! They did get the best bang for their buck with both Nate and Paige winning though.

...Disc Golfers rarely support those sponsors...

If so, then that's a huge problem. They've got to pay back the karma...I don't know what's wrong with people that they won't bother to take the miniscule effort to support those who support them! Time to grow up, people! (Of course I often see people doing business with those who would happily enslave them...it's truly mind boggling.)

I don't buy that. Just like liquor and porn, disc golf should be recession proof. This kind of sport grows fastest when people can't afford to do more expensive stuff. Its the same thing that helped catapult soccer to the biggest sport in the universe. You just need a ball and an open area to kick it around...pretty damn cheap. For disc golf, you just need a disc and an open area to throw it around...pretty damn cheap.

LOL - Wish that was the case but i'm willing to bet that since Discs are petroleum based they are feeling a pretty substantial pinch like my company is with rubber based products. Our prices have gone insane in the last year. Well i'm sorry they didn't sponsor worlds, but no clue what they could have added. Sure it's private info but what do Disc Sponsors usually donate. No figures but is it CFR plastic (which pros don't care about) or is it just added cash?

I think the discs companies should all add cash or even better fund the tourney in some way....upgrading courses etc.

A few BS points in this thread I can't stomach

The ace race still costs money to enter and is a marketing ploy to create buzz about a new product.....how is that giving back?

Disc Golf is not really cheap....you need land, a bag that is full of discs is well over 200 bucks (most have spent more), A course costs money to build and even more to maintain once in,

I do agree that the porn and liquor analogy works but only because we are all addicts.....but in a recession we start watching free internet porn, pre=gaming our drinking nights or drinking at home, just as disc golfers might start to slow down their impulsive disc buying and disc golf road trips

I don't think any of the disc golf manufacturers are really helping out like they could.....but why should they. The day we stop buying discs is the day they will start being a little more helpful. You see this is a capitalistic society and greed is what its based on. Is that a shock to anyone?

Discraft and Innova will not really help the sport out until the sport is in trouble and they start losing money.....we need them more than they need us and thats just the way it is.

It's unreal how much disc golfers think they are entitled to.

These companies do a ton for disc golf across the country and we just seem to think we deserve more.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let's go back to the first post (#1 post).

Have you researched on this before spewing negatively from your mouth on Discraft?

Discraft have been sponsoring several tournaments up to this date; see below:

* March 2 – 5, 2011 in Scottsdale, AZ – The Memorial Championship presented by DISCRAFT (NT & A-Tier) for Pros + AM

* June 25 & 26, 2011 in Ashtabula, OH – Discraft Shoot the Breeze Open (B/C-Tier) for Pros + AM

* August 5 – 7, 2011 in Dexter, MI – 30th Annual Discraft Great Lakes Open (B-Tier) for Pros + AM

* September 3 & 4, 2011 in Ludington/Shelby/Scottville, MI – Discraft Michigan State Finals ( B-Tier) for Pros + AM

* BREAKING NEWS! Ace Race presented by DISCRAFT with events 265 plus.

I have not seen INNOVA sponsoring any local, state, regional, championship, NT, Super class, etc especially USDGC, umm? Discraft already sponsored those tournaments before. Hence, Discraft have a right to brag who they sponsored; they sponsored Paige and Nate for the Pro World and that's all that matters.

Therefore, there is no need to spew negatively on Discraft if you have not researched their history before you make a determination on this.

.

I thought Innova was the main sponsor for the USDGC. Wasnt it thier choice to turn it into an every other year event? When ever you watch the videos from the USDGC its always Innova banners and baskets that you see not Discraft. It does look like Discraft sponsors more events than Innova does though.

Don't get me wrong, I think Discraft, Innova, DGA, Lat 64, and many others ... do give a ton back to the sport. No question! They all sponsor big events. They make fun plastic for us to throw, and awesome targets to throw at! They also have their marquee events: Discraft has the Memorial, Innova has the USDGC, DGA has Masters Cup, etc., etc., and they all usually pitch in to help with Worlds (partly shwag and partly cash), an event that often puts the local hosts into debt.

With regards to the poll question, after reading everyone's thoughts I've personally voted "Yes, they sponsor Nate and Paige, so that's all that matters." They sponsor the World's greatest golfers at the moment, and deserve all the respect and admiration that comes from that.

lol Any company that sponsors a winning athlete, in any sport, earns bragging rights. It's precisely why they sponsor athletes in the first place.

I stopped reading after this, this is the only point needing to be made.

Asking if a winner of an event and their sponsors have the right to brag if they werent themselves a sponsor is dumb. If a participant wins something, they and their representatives that use their likeness as part of a sponsorship deal have every right to brag regardless of who put on the event. Itd be like if a Nike sponsored athlete was on a superbowl winning team, saying Nike couldnt make ads featuring their "superbowl winner _______" in this or that product or make billboards w/ anything implying that Nike products had anything to do with him winning the superbowl.

Yes. they gave 18 baskets for the Timber Ridge course. that was the extent of their sponsorship.

Discraft sponsorship of Worlds in 2000, parlayed over many months by the various Michigan clubs into some serious cash, was an important part of that event's financial success.

OK, I may be wrong here. In major sporting events the biggest company's step up to sponsor the event. If Coke sponsors the "Super Bowl", Coke gets the rights to use the name, and Coke becomes the exclusive cola of the "Super Bowl". Sure Pepsi can buy ads from Fox or whomever is airing the Super Bowl, but it is still not sponsoring the Super Bowl itself, it can't use the name because it lost the bidding war. Why would Innova sponsor "Worlds" unless they get the same exclusive deal? Obviously they outbid Discraft, and they did this to benefit themselves...the same reason Discraft sponsors Am Worlds.

This.

But, historically in disc golf -- because of the grass roots nature of the sport -- everyone sponsors everything. Innova, Discraft, Gateway, etc... Maybe on varying levels, but you still see all the companies logos on T-shirts and stuff. Maybe World's is on another level???
