Selah Ranch

yah...I think the key to playing these types of courses (potentially long, etc) is to play in a group with similar skill sets. Otherwise it can be a yawn fest to be honest.

Did you play the longs or the shorts? My group of guys ages 40-51, and we've all been playing 20+ years, and we all are 920+ golfers who drive 300+.......and we play the shorts at Selah almost exclusively. AND we play doubles almost exclusively. We used to play the longs at all Houck's other courses (Wimberley, San Saba, Moody's), with lots of Singles rounds. But now the golf is secondary (tertiary?) to food, drink, bro-time......and playing the shorts (and doubles) makes it WAY more fun and WAY less arduous.

We play a mix now. It's hole by hole, but basically short tees on the 500+ holes and long on the shorter ones. But, on some of the shorter holes, the longs just suck. So, it just comes down to what the group wants.

Has this been posted here before? I don't recall seeing it.

As my 7th annual trip to Selah rapidly approaches, and as I watch Jomez vids, I'd love to see McBeth (Ricky, Eagle, Simon, etc) play Selah with Jomez coverage.

The re-bar from a few years ago was kaput, so we made some upgrades on our trip in early Apr:

Just got back from our annual trip. What I am about to say is all about me and NOT the courses or the quality of them. Anyway, I may be done with this particular trip. I am finding that I just don't enjoy this type of course as much as I did when we first started going. I have had shoulder issues over the years, and the amount of par4/5s plus the undriveable par 3s(for me) just add up on me. The enjoyment I get out of disc golf is measured by how excited I am to throw a particular tee shot. There just wasn't that much excitement for me this weekend. A few too many placement drives and too few throwing at baskets. I found that I enjoyed playing lake Nacogdoches on the way up was more fun. OTOH, if a group from here is definitely going, I am not sure I could really say no. So, I guess I am conflicted on it.

Yes, I get that.

I absolutely LOVE my trips to Selah, particularly this course. I love challenge and I love courses where you don't just grab a fast disc and throw -- players do have to make placement shots and good decisions to score well. I love that he has pretty much maximized the course's potential with the nearly all design elements. Iconic hole #7 is my favorite!

Please elaborate. I want to understand what you're saying here. Have you ever been there and played , btw?

Selah Ranch is now operating under new ownership as Pure Hope Ranch. As advertised: "The Inn, cottages, and disc golf will continue to operate with the same level of excellence and care you have come to expect at this 5-star property." Currently, the old website (www.selahranch.com) is still in use with a notice about the ownership change.

...

I better make it out there to play soon. You never know what could happen with change of ownership.

That name without more information scares me a little.

Makes my skin feel a lil warm ;)

Time for another DGCR meetup perhaps? Sometime around the DGPT Tx States (March 26-28) taking place nearby in Tyler might attract more people. I'm taking a crew out there that weekend from Dallas already - 3 or 4 of us so far.

what a horrific name

From the organization's web page:

THE VISION OF HOPE RANCH IS A VAST, BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY WHERE WE WILL:

Build a community of Hope Homes to restore survivors of sex trafficking

Walk with the young women through our Restorative Care Program

Establish a global training center where individuals and groups will be trained and equipped to serve this population

Host events at our retreat center to serve, empower and equip advocates of trafficking victims

It will be interesting to see if disc golf remains a priority if they are successful with building a community of homes.
