With all the hype on 5 star courses...

I was thinking that with all the newer hype on 5 star courses, should we redefine what a 5 star course is? I have played Flyboy and I know it's amazing. My point is with courses trying to go above and beyond to make a course a five star..I'm sorry a five disc course should we rethink what a five disc course is?? I still think Flyboy is the top I have ever played. I have played Flyboy, Dela, stafford lake and other top courses. And Flyboy gets my vote. I hope that this makes sense to the rest for you. I see new ratings coming in for new courses that have 5 stars. I don't disagree I just think that maybe with all the new nice courses out there we might have to redefine what the nicest courses are. What do you all think out there? Thanks and I hope this is a good discussion.

you got spirit kid...love your enthusiasm....but theres a rule around DGCR...no one likes to discuss courses or course design or course reviews or courses in general...prepare to get mocked or instructed to use the search feature....

All kidding aside theres really far too many variables to ever trust the ratings on here....theres a few diamond reviewers who I just don't understand and theres a mess of courses that for my tastes are underrated or even overrated...what I've learned is that there really are many types of courses and styles of courses to enjoy....what craps me up about Flyboy is that the Jenkins' killed its ratings early on.

Some people think Chicken McNuggets are the bees knees and some people think a Bison Filet is. We can never generalize what 5 stars actually is, that's why it's a review site :)

You read a course review from "Reviewer X" and then go play the course...... come to find out that your tastes in course design is TOTALLY different that Reviewer X. :wall:

IMO, the worst thing about DGCR is the dgcr part of it! Because reviews are opinions and everyone has the best one in the world (certainly the one that matters most). But what good - really - is being a millionaire if EVERYONE is a millionaire? Grasp the concept? Note: My writing here is only an opinion!!

I believe - since I've never (nor ever will) rated a course here - there are ratings possibilities of 0 to 5 in half-point increments. If that's true, then you can only 'rate' a course 1 of 11 possible ratings. That's kind of rating your girl friend. Ya gonna say "but honey, a 9 out of 11 is in the top 82 percentile"? Note: if "yes", then I've just met a dead man. Yet this is a "4" here...supposedly a very good course.

Don't worry too much about numbers. If YOU like the course, play it.

Karl
Ps: Just read your post above Jeff. Agreed.

Exactly this. I can almost say for certain that I wouldn't rate a "park" style course as 5 stars. Just my tastes. My idea of 5 stars would probably be a lot of strenuous climbing and rugged terrain. It's all about opinion, but thats what makes good reviews is reading what other people that also play the sport think. There are too many variables to go with the myriad of personality types to say "everyone should think this is 5 stars". I also think people put way too much stock in other peoples opinions. Are Flyboy and Flip awesome? I'm sure they are. Are there a ton of people there? My guess is more than likely. So in my opinion that would ding the course a bit. But that's just my Opinion. Even if they are already only 4.5 stars to my pre conceptions without actually playing them I'd still go out of my way to throw a round at either place.

Also if I remember right a 5 star course is supposed to be perfect in every way. And no course is going to be that to all people.

^Bad examples, you'll have flyboy to yourself if you play and flip is far enough from civilization that it never gets all that much traffic.

While a review is just an opinion, and may lead you astray if the reviewer's taste differs from your own, an accumulation of reviews and ratings certainly has value. If you read a dozen or more different reviews of a course, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect. If you average a dozen or couple of dozen of ratings, you'll have something of a consensus.

It's not precise and it's not gospel, but it's a vast improvement over having neither reviews nor ratings. You can't tell as much from photos, hole lengths, or even a layout map. Unless I know one person with my exact taste who's played all the courses I might play and can give me recommendations, I'll check the ratings and read the reviews and be much better off than the olds days when I had just the PDGA directory, with just locations and course lengths.

Sorry they were the two I could think of off the top of my head. And I remember seeing a picture of a park like fairway with a hangar on it at one of them.

Yup, that's Kelly's private land and personal hangar at flyboy.

Plus Kelly is without a doubt one of the nicest human beings i've bene lucky enough to have met. Also, still crack up at the Brown Brillo pad textured terrier that seems to get into everyones bags! :)

That's exactly right. The collective reviews, both good and bad meshed together, help paint a solid picture of what you can expect when visiting a new course. It's a godsend IMHO. If you're stupid enough to read a single review and accept it as gospel then that's your own problem...

My advice is not to get too caught up in the actual top 10 rankings or which courses are "5-star". Use the site to find which courses are 1) better than average (worth the drive) 2) average (good to play when in the area) 3) below average (don't waste your time, unless you have time to waste, then by all means play a round of disc golf!). I have never thought "well, that course is a 4.5- it must be horrible."

Also, all reviewers have different opinions, so take some time to find some reviewers whose tastes and playing style are similar to yours. I know a handful of people on here that like the same style of courses I do, and I know who likes course styles that I don't prefer to play. Both are helpful.

I find your user name and opinions offensive.... :p

If there is one thing that has been consistent on this site and Tim has always been adamant about never changing is the review system. Love it, like it, or hate it - it is the system we use.

There is no real "bad-to-good" scale here, just a compilation of "least favorite to most favorite" scales.

There are lots of people (including tons of gold and diamond reviewers) that are very up-front that they review merely on first impressions. They do this under the premise that this site is most useful for travelers. What it yields is something very superficial.

To get an idea what a five star course is, play over 50 courses, rank them in order of what are your favorite (insert into list by which one would you play the most if they were all 5 miles from your house) then assign these DGCR scores to them:

Code:
[B]DGCR	Grade	%	# that get this score/grade[/B]
5.0	A+	3%	1-2
4.5	A-	5%	2-3
4.0	A	8%	4
3.5	B+	12%	6
3.0	B	14%	7
2.5	B-	16%	8
2.0	C+	14%	7
1.5	C	12%	6
1.0	C-	8%	4
0.5	D	5%	2-3
0.0	D-	3%	1-2

Ive heard a story as to why the jenkins left those ratings, but won't delve into it,so if Kelly wants to come in here and explain he can :)
