Brainwave-Like Disc Dyeing

ok so I went and got some of the mcquires tire gel stuff and allow me to say that it definately isnt the consistency I thought it would be...its more like dish soap consistency, which isnt necessarily a bad thing but still in line with the stuff we have already dealt with. The bright side is it does have the grape smell. The only thing I am concerned with it however is that on the back label it says to keep away from things that you dont want slippery and I began thinking of it, this stuff likely is oil based some how which will be good for the dye to not stick kinda but it also makes me wonder about how its gonna effect the plastic and if it will leave it slippery

ive been reading into this and wanted to possibly suggest the ideas of dying vasilene or hair gels? I would think the gel would get hard and not evaporate, and the vasilene might be good for something.

probably been tried already or thought of, just wanted to try and contribute

I think I have some clear hair gel at home, I might give that a try tonight, good idea B&W...........

Jerry, Quit trying to dye discs and make your wife happy by adding knobs to those cabinets. :|

That is a project she is finishing up, knobs are last thing........... =-) Funny thing is, when I took the picture I said, "someone is gonna say something funny about those holes"... :hfive:

maybe thinning some of the stronger holding gel with some water to deepen the colors and then just speeding up the drying process with a hair dryer. I would assume there would be a little bit of shrink during the hardening process, but worth a shot:hfive:

It seems like I have tried everything else, so why not..... For the record, freezing the disc with the s/c/bwave dye design on them didn't seem to work at all on my end.....

if you're looking to go "thicker" - try some hair pomade - a lot thicker than gel, but could potentially work.

I also remember Jeff mentioning a laundry list of items he used as carriers (sodium alginate, mashed potatoes, etc) - but can't find where it was posted...

I'm guessing the grape smell is coming from a "pre-bath" soak...

I doubt its kool aid. If it was, the discs would smell different, but they all smell of grape

Jeff mentioned so many things it's hard to tell which ones he used, which ones were what he "used to use" or if he was just trying to mess with everybody. =-)

I have been thinking about the "solution" that jeff has been said to use. I was thinking maybe it's a pre-soak for the disc so it can take the dye better. Some sort of chemical compound that would "loosen" the plastic to make it a tad more porous. Since all of the dyes i see from him are ALWAYS vibrant, i would assume this would assist in the process. What i don't know is, if the surface of the disc still feels smooth or it is a little rough like when you wipe away a stamp too long with acetone and it gets a slight texture.

Just food for thought, who knows, maybe jeff is a chemist and has cheap access to some chemicals us normal folk can't get.

Best from the weekend.

k, FYI Mcquires tire gel......BAD IDEA!!! it seems to break down the shaving cream and turn it into a gooey mess...which then rolls over to the dye and it doesnt mix in evenly. i now have water that beads up in my sink from rinsing my mixing bowl lol

ohhh and the scent doesnt stick with it either

Bang! The one on the left with purple dye, the one on the right, blue dye on blue.....:hfive: The purple one is already 90% dry...

I knew you couldn't wait to post those.
You were right!

the one on the right is sick...was it my ideas that helped? I can only hope..
You were right!

Tell us how the disc takes the dye with that gel.

It has already set where the small veins are. You can't smudge or smear it. The larger veins in the center are still wet so I will let them set until morning. I have done three discs and I will be putting one of them in a bed of s/c in the morning as well.......

ok, im sure we already saw this, so why are we having such a difficult time with this? this is convo between people on the PDGA site from back in 2005. What is it we are missing? is it the consistency of the dye? is it that we have too much tide on the plate? i just did some straight laundry detergent and put the dye on top. I can see when I pull it out the wave aspect but its like the dye is suspended in the tide, so if it bakes i can see the dye getting to the disc but not really. im lost

I figured out how to do a brainwave style dye. Use fairly thick rit dye & tide. Place some in a plate, take the disc and press it top down into the dye then pull the disc up off of the plate. If you don't like the pattern you got stick it in the dye again until you get something you like.

See how easy it is! Not the same dye, but you nailed the technique. So simple. It still takes good technique, practice, dye mixture, plates, etc... but it's not brain surgery. It's just Brainwaves.
