[Gateway] Gateway Wizard

Found a beautiful no tooling old wizard at play it again over the weekend. Old ozark mountain stamp.
As I recall George was a really early Wizard convert, so there are probably a ton of great old Wizards floating around BoCoMo.

The story I always heard* about SSS plastic was that George liked his putters soft, so they would run Wizards and leave some in the practice baskets in Davey Mac's yard to sit in the sun and soften up for George. After a while they thought it would be easier to just make them softer and try to sell them. They sold like hotcakes and SSS became a thing.

*as with all stories on the Interwebz, there is a .09% chance that it is actually true.

Probably not, the only wizards with any kind of collector value in my experience are legit first runs from when the Wizard first came out, or old small-stamps without tooling on the back. There's a first run organic on ebay that someone's trying to sell for $30, but none have sold anytime recently.

Even legit proto dont sell for a ton of fast unless new. I am glad mine didnt sell when I tried. Best offer I got in 2015 was $14 for a 7/10 blue proto.
Now the nikkos were similar blend and thin plate the demand may be lower.

that was my thought

wizards dont have that rare collector value but the wizard collectors seem to have them by the 100s
Thats the great thing about collecting less desireable or valuable discs. I had a stupid shark collection (mostly CE or Pro) and never paid over $40 for a disc.

Im back to wizards to. After ,for some reason, trying to kick them out the bag.

Anyone know what runs are coming out with flat shoulders? In a SS firmness?

The hemp wizards have tall shoulders. If you know what im talking about, please recommend me some.

Stopped by Gateway on Friday. Current stock of SS/ER is flat shoulder. Actually, most of the current stock of Wizards even in premium plastic is coming out flat shoulder. Current ER on shelves is either rubbery/grippy or slick/oily feeling, so if you order ER make sure to specify what feel you're looking for. I'm assuming the slick/oily ones will be more velvety when they season. Current run of glow is SSS/SS territory and also is flat shoulder and feels great.

If you're looking for a thrower, see if you can get your hands on their hyper diamond Wizards. They feel amazing in hand. I had to pick a couple up. Don't ask me what hyper diamond is... I forgot already. Slightly different blend of platinum. Has more urethane in it and some other additive. Feels like star plastic. They came out flat shoulder and fly great.

No tool wizard find

Haha! I'll have to ask George about that next time I stop by ShowMe Disc Sports.

This one feels pretty firm, but is still soft enough to have the slightest of clover. Definitely chewed up, but plenty of life left as a putting putter.

I bought a pair of Wizards stamped for the Australian Relief Effort and they feel fantastic. They are marked Hemp SS, just a great SS blend. Haven't thrown them yet, but the feel reminds me of the pair of Glow Wizards I bought in 2013. Gateway just keeps making great Wizards. I'll be interested to see how the Hemp plastic ages.

Two questions, what is the deal with special blend plastic and does anyone know if they are going to make another run of the nikko wizards? I should have stacked up on them, but I didn't realize I liked them as much as I do.

I thought the Pure White Putters were like the Nikko Wizards minus the old top to the disc?

I mean wouldn't all the current Wizards be like the Nikko Wizards minus the old top?

Special Blend was a few years ago. After the G9i/medium thing it seemed like they threw a lot of stuff at the wall to see what would stick. There were different kinds of Special Blend, there was like SB17, SB18, SB22, SB30...I don't really know how many there were. They were all kinda SS in flex (I think one was floppier like RFF but I don't recall which one) so it must have mostly had to do with how tacky the grip was? Maybe? I don't know. It was poorly explained, poorly advertised and confusing on the consumer end so I just never bothered to order any or worry about them. They had a cool stamp, anyway.

As to the Nikko Wizards, he's with Westside so there won't be any more Nikko Wizards any time soon. Will they make any more with the old thin top? No clue, I haven't heard a thing.
