Dangerous Course

My favorite is when it would be a reasonably good and safe 9 hole layout, but the designer decides to force fit a 2nd set of tees to make "a full 18."

Now pedestrians have twice as many locations stuff can be heading at them from. :\

Worth repeating:
The "any course is a good course" mentality needs to be a thing of the past.
Couldn't have said it better.

In the case of Door Elementary (and probably most other courses on school property) it is unplayable by outsiders when school is in session. The few times I've been there, the playground is not in use.

Not saying it's good or bad design...

This is exactly what you are talking about. Whatta ridiculous design.

I think a lot of 9's are done by newer people looking to design a course that won't require much work to build and won't need any future maintenance. They find a township park, school area, walking trail, ski hill, etc where most of the trees have already been cleared and the grass will be mowed by the park/school in the future. And of course, these locations are already being used for other activities so adding a disc golf course will cause safety issues.
Even if this newbie designer would prefer to do an 18 hole course, it's much more difficult to find these kinds of properties that are large to fit an 18 hole course.

I was gonna link this one too, haha. Really poor course design.

I agree with the consensus here. It seems like many 9-holers are poorly designed and crammed into small multi-use parks. But I think the worst of all is when designers seemingly go to any length necessary to make 18 holes. If Hughes Park was only 9 holes, it would probably still be pretty unsafe on that small plot of land. It's nowhere near big enough for 18.

Ah yes. Hughes park. Its a nice begginner course as long as nobody else is there but it gets crowded REAL quick! And the playground isn't optimal.

They actually do have a winter league :\

Lunatic League - I've heard of those. Nah, more power to them - beauty is in the eye of the disc holder, plus maybe that's just the course they've got and gotta make do. I don't know the area.

Its the only 18 hole course in the immediate area. Keeping travel time down in the winter is always a good idea. The playground probably gets no useage in the snow. And then you're all bundled up so the discs don't hurt as bad...

This ones a top contender. Dave will agree with me on this one. I even waited out a thunderstorm in the parking lot for almost a half an hour to play it. :wall:

Luckily, since it just rained, there were no fatalities when we visited this gem.

I can't tell how dangerous this one is from the course map, but it looks like an "Excuse Me" course. Several times you have to walk around, or through, another hole to get to the next tee.

Hahaha yes I do. I have to admit the 13/14 combo has to be the worst designed pair of holes I have ever seen anywhere. Just absolutely astounding that ANYONE would think this is a good idea - even people who have never played disc golf before. And what's truly frustrating about that course is you could put in a decent course there especially with the water and elevation there but this is the garbage they went with. smh...

I drove by this one a couple times, haven't subjected myself to it yet. :D

If we are picking on West MI courses for safety issues though, here's another entry. Luckily, it's about 1/3 pulled so I doubt it gets much play anymore.

Lulz. My daughter went to Grand Valley, and I've passed that course several times while moving her in/out, visiting. Thought about playing it but it looked like a joke/disaster/accident waiting to happen, and always ended opting for another course.

I feel confident I'm not gonna regret driving right past that course a half a dozen times or so.

That's nuts! I wouldn't say there is a high risk of hitting a person, but hitting a building...WOW!

Yeah, absolutely no reason to play that one unless you are a student without a car. And probably not even then anymore now that a bunch of it is missing. I went to Grand Valley myself and enjoyed several (in hindsight, very unsafe) rounds there then. It's near impossible to play a full round there without hitting at least one building. At the talent level I was at then, parked cars were very much in play too. As for people, generally the throws aren't blind at least but in nicer weather residents were often grilling, lounging in lawn chairs or on blankets, etc. I'm pretty sure on at least one occasion some woman walked out her back door just as I threw. Just a silly course.

Thankfully they did redesign the original 9. It isn't particularly fun, but at least most holes won't result in injury. I still think 2 plays too close to the walking path though.

Can you post a new course map? Looks like the original is still linked. I always liked original hole 9.
