Grunting while driving

I don't know if this is true, but i've been told by a few advanced players that a good grunt or yell while you're ripping a drive can give you an extra 15% of power. Is there truth to this? Anyone want to discuss this?:p

there's a kid named david wiggins jr. he seems to grunt on occassion. and the disc seems to go very, very far.

when i grunt, however, i end up sharting.

i think it has more to do with form and power...

I don't grunt, but I do like to yell when I try to uncork a big drive. I think it helps focus your energy into the hit, something like a martial arts punch.

I'm only interested in modifications that give me 20% or more of benefit...

In all seriousness, the only way you're going to improve a throw by grunting is if you're actually intentionally holding back to prevent a grunt. The sound is a side-effect of your action, not a driving force.

I've seen plenty of silent killers who can bomb it with no noise whatsoever.

This ^. The noise is not always necessary but it is important that you are exhaling rather than inhaling during the throw and this is true in almost every quick athletic movement. Sports Science did a study of martial artist breaking bricks and found they did perform better when grunting/yelling, I think it gets more air out quicker making the body harder and maybe psychological too.

I think it works but not because of the noise, when you grunt or whimper or yell an obscenity (depending on the situation) you are exhaling, and it has been proven that breathing is good, enough so that it adds 100% to your life expectancy.

Seriously though, as in weightlifting you have to continuously breath and allow your other muscles to relax while focusing on the individual muscles that the action requires. But you don't have to make noise.

I like to scream at the top of my lungs all the way through my swing. I start at the back of the tee box, and don't stop until my disc has landed. On long downhill shots, I have been known to pass out from lack of oxygen.

Both my football coach, and martial arts instructor were of the opinion that the 'grunt', or 'kiai', caused a slight adrenaline rush, and therefore, a small increase in strength. I've never tried it while throwing discs, but it would stand to reason that it would provide the same small 'boost'.

Buddy of mine who normally drives in the 300 - 350ft range recently shouted out "I HAVE THE POWER" ala Conan the Barbarian and threw a good 50ft further than I've ever seen him hurl a disc. He then whipped out his greatsword and decapitated Skeletor who was playing in the group behind us.

In power lifting, you are taught to always exhale during the lift itself. Like on bench press, you drive the air from your lungs when pressing up, then inhale on the way down. It's the same thing in other power sports like shot put or discus. Watch a video of a professional discus thrower. If they don't actually yell, you can often head them exhaling like they were hit in the chest. It causes your body to completely exert itself.

That's what I do, exhale with no noise. I still don't throw very far though...
