[Discraft] Comet love?

Downhill is a tricky shot with a comet depending on freshness and weight. I have about a 45 degree downhill at my place. Ideal comet to laser it at 200'-240'? Is a esp 176 with light wear or a fresh 172 Z or 174 ESP.. My mildly worn 172 will turn a bit, as will my medium wear 174 glow Z...

My 176 fresh esp is good as long as I aim about 5' to the side and let it hyzer in.. Point is the late fresh stability is the key. But none of these shots are missing by a lot as long as I don't tilt anhyzer on release..

My 172 ESP mild to medium worn (1yr ish) is great on the flat. Lasers most of the way but I'm just now gettin a tiny 3'-4' jog anny direction at 75 percent flight before straightening and coming back. It's a trick shot around late trees to ace kinda thing... so I think I'm forcing it a touch.

Pick this beauty up for 5.99 in the used bin at my local pias. This thing is awesome. Throw it flat and it will have a beautiful turnover that is nice and slow and glidly. Glad I pic this up. It made me put a glo comet back in my bag to compliment this x one.

Sounds like two great comets. I play waterworks here in Kansas City quite a bit, and one day I happened to be playing a five disc round. Hole 14 is downhill, probably 400' as the crow flies but about 350 power. Hung the destroyer out too far right, the teebird was a little early, ended left. Thought, " why not try the comet?" Little bit of hyzer, five foot drop in. You can force Em more than you think.

Yeah I was editing for "sprinkle of hyzer" but timed out. On the flat it's a fine line to ride.

Takes a Comet lover to buy one that dirty, but all the hard work is done to it.

How taco'd is that beaut?

Nice. My X is a couple of years old and has a definite curve to it, but is such a reliable, easy turnover disc, I absolutely love it. Just not a fan of the taco look!

Yeah turnovers from up to 300' is what I've been throwing this for lately. Love it.

Lord help me, I'm out of touch with my comets again... been playing my new sweet and simple ESP's but I lost the groove with my regular favs... tourney tomorrow. It might get shelved for the second tourney in a row...

How many "Hail Johanssen's" should I say to be forgiven of these sins?

What has happened to all the Comets? I'm looking for a diagnostic disc, 165g X-line, and they are sold out everywhere. Not just the X-lines but almost every other Comet is sold out as well from multiple vendors. Any reason for their rarity right now? Will I have to wait 75 years for the Comet to come back?

Discraft that is based in michigan got hit hard with the lockdown due to covid. They are ramping up production as of late. I'd say with in a month or two most of discraft's lineup will be in stock.

I honestly think Discraft was going to have production problems regardless of COVID. I think their concentration was on marketing and selling McBeth/Pierce/Smith product. I think stock plastic was going to be scarce. They essentially shut down custom stamping for tournaments all together and stock tournament plastic for tournaments were awful in selection. But, to your point, COVID shutdown did not help the matter.

Dude at my local shop says their inventory is trickling upward. He's ordering more often from them and smaller orders as inventory shows up.

I'm pretty well stocked on Comets, I've grabbed several new or lightly used Z over the last year. Z Comet was the star of my last round in the woods. Stamp is wiped so I got the inevitable "what is that" after piping a couple dead straight 250ish drives with it.

"What is that" is a compliment, a question, and a great conversation starter all in one. I can't wait to get my first Comet and see what all the fuss is about!

The only course that I go to that has a guy selling discs on course is Delaveaga. I was just there and didn't think to go look because I figured I would order a new Comet as soon as I got home:doh:

It definitely seems like Discraft has really concentrated on making and selling Paul McBeth discs and this years tour series discs. Theres so many MJ Comets around but nothing else.

I'm looking for my next batch of Comets and need some advice from you Comet gurus.

I currently hyzerflip 174 X-Comets with a RHBH out to 250' on a frozen rope...I love these things! But I really have to be careful to not overturn it, especially with any kind of wind. I think 300 isn't out of the question for me if I had one I can trust just a bit more.

I would like to take a small step up in stability, but I don't know much about Discraft plastics. Is ESP my next step up, or would it be Z? What range of weights should I be considering in this new plastic choice?

I'd really like to get something with MJ's name on it, but I'm not sure if it would work for me.

I think I overthink Comets sometimes. It's a touch disc, so YMMV.

The easiest baseline thing for you to do is get a heavy Z Comet. A heavy Z Comet is the stock disc answer to the "most OS Comet" question and will be better into the wind for you. If you don't like that one, and ESP Comet should take a little edge off or you can drop down in weight.

Regardless of the era and plastics the disc was available in, I've always carried a heavy one. Back in the Tourney Pro days it was a newish heavy one. Later it was a heavy Z. Now it's a heavy ESP that's not beaten in yet. Having a heavy one has always helped me with the wind issue; it might be in my head but it works up to about 20mph. We had 30mph about a week ago and I don't think there was a God I could pray to that would help my Comets. :(

^ Thanks for the reply. I'll start looking at some Z's....maybe I'll get a range of weights and see which I prefer.

I don't need anything too beefy, just something that I can throw a bit flatter, and in 10- 15 mph winds. Colorado can get stupid windy some days, but I have my Rocs and Caiman for that.
