Where are you going in 2023?

Wow somehow I missed this thread till now!

I don't have anything set in stone for 2023 yet. But my girlfriend wants to go to Europe so places like Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland could be in play.

Would love to get out to Hillcrest on Prince Edward Island.

Pretty sure I'm going to get out to Denver to visit a close friend who moved there, and hit some of the highly rated courses in that area.

Another friend recently moved to Cincinnati and he even plays disc golf, so visiting him and playing Idlewild seems like a no-brainer.

Will likely have another trip or multiple trips to the north side of NYC area for work. I want to get to Brakewell/Warwick this time for sure.

Might head up to Michigan's UP yet again. Maybe this time I'll actually, really be able to bag all the courses there (which was the goal the last two times I went, but they just keep popping up!)

Locally, I've done pretty well covering terrain north and west of me but there are still tons of courses south towards Kalamazoo and east towards Lansing/etc. that are fairly close options, but I have never played them.

I imagine I won't get around to doing all of those things - but I did more than I thought I would this year so we'll see!

Here's an update on this.

Europe trip is planned for late fall. But it's more southern Europe (northern Italy, Austria, southern Germany, Switzerland), and we decided to do a guided trip. So not sure if it will be possible to fit disc golf in.

Did a small Denver trip but only played one round out there.

Ended up taking a small trip to Vermont and played one round there too. And a small trip to LA recently.

Cincinnati/Idlewild in the books! So far this year I have added five new states! VT, CO, OH, KY, and CA. :D But only had time to hit one course in each haha (except 2 in OH).

Still dreaming about the annual UP adventure. My understanding is they got 18-24 inches of snow there early last week. So, it's still a few weeks or months away.

Working on the local courses. They keep popping up on UDisc! Someone also listed a course there that won't be open till 2025.

Your travel plans for 2023 sound exciting! Playing golf courses and bagging new experiences sounds like a great way to make the most of your trips. As for me, I'm still in the early stages of planning, but I'm thinking about a beach getaway in the summer and maybe a hiking trip in the fall.

hell yah let us know what you end up doing

im hoping to grab the copper harbor area this year (for dg and mtb)

Just got back from a few days south of Boston and will be posting an updated review of Borderland S.P., as well as new reviews for Sunnymede and Hawkins Woods.

I decided to hold off on the K3 review for Indian Hammocks in Miami. Now with rainy season here I will probably be done with reviews for a while. I anticipate my decline on the top reviewers of 2023.

Mountain biking may be better than DG right around there from what I hear. I believe the mountain biking is very good, and for DG just the one 9er at the lodge that I am aware of.

Glassila's course is on the way up there though, definitely worth hitting.

And WOW there are like 3-4 more courses in the UP now on UDisc since last time I looked! This summer's trip there for me just got a little more mileage on it. :wall: :D

Calumet Lake is supposedly one of the better courses in the UP.

I plan on making my way up there this summer as well. And hopefully Marquette.

Highly recommended on both counts!

Considering an impromptu trip on Friday and Saturday to St. Petersburg, so I should be able to hit and do Picnic Island, Tocobaga, and probably one other course. Two rounds a day due to the extreme heat/humidity, plus drive time (3.5 to 4 hours each way from Ft Laud). I've played almost everything else worthwhile, and with the exception of Picnic, I'm trying to stay west of the bay. Weather is going to be much better there than here.

A cousin's graduation party west of Chicago is now on the calender. My FIL passed away last week and opened up our schedules to full retirement, green light travel. We pick up an AirBnb for June 1-5. The wife, dog and I are going to try to hit:

Lake Arvesta Farms on the way out West

The Canyons and Fairfield Park planned around the party

Just missing Chicago Blues Fest by one weekend.:mad::thmbdown:
I would consider extending the trip, to spend a day reaffirming that "the blues are alright", but need to get home for an estate sale and a trip to Gaylord MI, for a goddaughter's wedding and some quick bagging.

Any advice/insight or comments on the Illinois courses? I have played Rogers Lakewood and Lemon Lake.

You can't go wrong with the Canyons or Fairfield. Dellwood gets pretty busy so the earlier you get there the better.

Since you'll be in the Joliet area I'd recommend Highland park too. Awesome wooded course and will be much less crowded.

Shorewood park is a Steady Ed course originally. Also lots of fun. Old school style course with most holes around or under 200 feet. Community park is worth a look too.

I haven't played most of the ones around Fairfield yet. I've heard good things about Fel-pro over by Crystal Lake though.

Blues fest can be fun, but it's in Grant Park right in the middle of downtown. Getting in and out can really test your patience (especially if you are getting there by car). Could always hit up one of the famous blues nightclubs like Kingston Mines or Buddy Guy's Legends? (also roughly downtown, but not quite the sh!t show of Grant Park)

I'm not sure what to think about Arvesta. I played it in Nov in a stiff wind and lost both of my Wraiths in the first few holes. Definitely missed distance drivers the rest of the round. Not sure where I'd rate it playing with the full bag.

I agree with everything wolf said. I hate waiting on every tee, so I rarely play Dellwood/Canyons anymore. Like he said, get there early. The Fel-pro course in Cary that he mentions is a lot of fun, but it was nearly as busy as Canyons the one time I played (sunny summer Saturday).

What suburb is the Air Bnb in?

i would pass on arvesta

check in was absolute miserable and costed me i think 30 minutes (no kiddin)

then you walk up that hill to hole 1 tee pad then you walk back down it and have to go around

even if youre a noodle arm you have to walk all the long pins and it eats at time and energy

all for really lackluster golf

ymmv but it was a dreadful experience and i want my time back

I don't think it took 30 minutes when I went, but it definitely took waaaay too long. At least 10-15. I think I was their first discer of the day. But I was trying to get an early start and already a little annoyed that they don't open until 10 or something. I don't know why they couldn't just have people do all that stuff online.

Agreed on backtracking all the way down the backside of the hill after throwing the first tee shot is a lousy way to start the round. The front side is so steep that they'd need to build a wooden staircase off of the side. As is it sets the tone for all the walking you'll be doing.

There are some interesting holes (some in a good way and some not so much). There was also one hole that was under construction with a bunch of earth moving going on. I want to give it another shot in better conditions.

The festivals have been moved from Grant to Millennium Park these days. An awful move, IMO...really lose a ton of the "park" feel and appeal. But, your advice on access and parking still apply. The gospel fest is going on the weekend we are in the area and I am still considering braving the navigation issues. I am pretty familiar with the setup, it might be the traffic getting into town, that scares me away. I'm not sure giving up a day of playing is worth either of the hassles. :hfive:

I always try to take the train into the city. I'd rather do some extra walking from the station than sit in traffic and hunt for expensive parking. If your air bnb is in one of the suburbs with a metra station, that can make it a lot less painful.

Gospel fest sounds like fun. That's one I've never been to. I have been to Chicago Black Fest though!

Millennium park used to be a part of Grant park, so like with sports arena names, I haven't bothered to adjust. Those festivals used to use the Petrillo music shell plus some temporary stages. I agree that setup was more of the atmosphere I'm looking for than the fancier Pritzker pavillion. Millennium is kitty corner from the Petrillo, so it's the same logistical sh!t show it's always been for the summer festivals.

Fairfield is my home course and would be up for meeting you out there for a round if my schedule allows. Similar to Dellwood, it gets pretty busy in the summer months so I try to get out there as early as possible. Both are the best options now in the Chicago area as the others have already mentioned above.

Walnut Hollow and Fel-Pro in Cary along with Rolling Knolls in Elgin are the next best courses IMO.

If you want to drive a bit farther, then head up north to Grey/Red Fox and Silver Fox in Silver Lake, WI. Down south...Highland Park and West Park in Joliet.

Very cool. We hit about 30 Bluefest in a row. We had a group of buddies that would fly in and drive for the Fest. Nearly all of them in the Grant Park set up. We always stayed right by the park...many years at the Congress. COVID put an end to the annual pilgrimage. Hoping to get back to it next year. I have been down there for a couple Taste's over the year. We generally take Amtrak from Detroit. Taking the Metra is the answer. I have been to a lot of festivals, concerts and parties around the world....Chicago's festivals are among the best.
