Did I do a bad thing?

Judge Judy, we need a Ruling on Lost and Misplaced Plastic Toys bearing the name and number of the owner.

JJ: Mr. Woodpecker, You've told The Court what transpired...do you have The Receipt for The Plastic Toy that bears your name and you claim to be yours?

Mr. W: No, your Honor.

JJ: Well then, Mr. Woodpecker....how does The Court know that said Plastic Toy is actually your Plastic Toy and not a Plastic Toy that was Lost or Misplaced on a prior occasion in an undisclosed location, discovered by you, Mr. Woodpecker and claimed as your own personal Plastic Toy?

( dramatic music plays)

Voiceover: Judge Judy will return after this message Kellogg's Wheaties.

Lots of thought, time and energy over 2 chunks of plastic.

This is a case for Doctor Phil. Everybody has to get in touch with their feelings, take some ownership and hug at the end.

More after a word from our sponsor. < Viagra>

Trifocal,
You crack me up ...

There were three young boys sloshing around in the creek just down from the tee box. I, not wanting to climb into this stench filled mess, asked them if they would find my disc if I gave them a couple of bucks.

..so you're afraid to enter the water and then threaten some kid who has the balls to enter the water and retrieve your disc.

Who's the real jerk here? YOU or some kid out sloshing around.

Remember, none of this would have happened IF you had the balls to retrieve your own disc.

And you wonder why people think disc golfers are GAY.

I knew this had to do with Viagra...

Its seems that we boys are as attached to our plastic dics ( spelled incorrectly to accentuate...some weak attempt at humour) as we are attached to our balls.

But how did gay bashing get in? I need to know.

When I hear about men who are afraid to enter dirty water to retrieve their disc they lost and then threaten some 13 year kid, that's an unsexual GAYNESS imo.

Being GAY on the disc golf course has nothing to do with sexuality, it has to do with being a FAIRY!

after he found the lady's disc, I probably would have explained that I knew that person and would like to return the disc and I will give you $5 for the 2 discs (chances are if he agreed to the $2 in the first place, he would have agreed to this) - instead, you gave him the $5 before renegotiating the original deal

and I thought Viagra was invented for the Homo-erotic types?

I guess I'll throw in my opinion on this matter. Nothing else to do at work anyhow.

This is a sensitive subject. On one hand, threatening can be harsh sometimes and, honestly, may have not been the best course of action in this situation. Usually with kids like the one you described, I have come to find that the best course of action is to let it go. Yeah, the kid gets away with being an arrogant, pompous little jerk, but you just have to feel sorry for that kid later in life cause that kind of attitude leads nowhere.

On the other hand, there are a lot of good factors in this story.

1. You offered to pay a kid, who was playing in a creek, money to retrieve a disc

Most would have just walked up and said "Hey, could you toss me that disc?" You offering money right off the bat is very notable and beyond what most would have done.

2. When you knew the kid found 2 discs, you were going to offer more

Some people would have just still only payed the $2 and tried to get away with it. Again, very notable and beyond what some would have done

3. You tried to reason with the kid and even offered MORE before getting verbal

This shows that you had enough patience to try and talk him down. Maybe the kid was having a bad day, maybe he just needed to get a little something more that you were more than willing to give, and gave; I think this was another good move.

4. You let the kid mouth off a lot longer than most and, as you said in a previous post, you weren't really going to get physical

I was really relieved when I saw that you said that things wouldn't have gotten physical. There are some messed up people out there who may have; I'm glad to see you're not one of them. Also, most people would have shot off long before you did. Patience is a virtue. And finally, the threat was the last resort. This kid had plenty of opportunity to do the right thing and CHOSE to be an immature 3 year old going through the "mine" stage.

All in all, threatening is a moral standpoint. Personally, I may have just "let it go," but in saying that, I also believe that the situation was handled the best that it could been other than just saying "You know, you're not worth it." The kid has got a lot of things to work out in life and probably needs a hard lesson or 2 to get back on the right track (and will in the right timing). We can only hope that later in life, he realizes that you tried to do the right thing first and that he was the one being a jerk.

Also, with you posting this story and asking "Did I do a bad thing?," maybe you are feeling conflicted about it as well. If that's the case, just take it as is, can't do anything to change it now, you weren't completely in the wrong, and you did handle the situation in a very mature manner. But in most opinions, threatening either needs to be the last resort or not even in the equation.

And I'm with you. When I write, I write novels

I was not there (like the rest of us), however having been at a course where teenages hangout and tear things up. I'm sure the kid was a bigger shit then it sounds from the first post.

I try to stay as far away from these kids as I can and never talk to them. They all ways talk shit and you cant do anything about it.

the only thing I think WP. did wrong was being a DG and making the kid mad. The littel SOB may have given the disc up, but next time you go out to the course a basket will be missing. Not because the kid would use it at home but just to get back at the Disc golfer that pissed him off. These kid tear things up for no reason and I try my best to give them no reason to mess with the baskets or tees.

Take it easy man! I disagreed with Supersloth too on the Phelps thread. Just because you put the word Respectfully in front of something doesn't mean it's cool. Why are you so angry solomon. I hope kids stay away from you!

i dont like people that are disrespectful. and kids that swear like a navy sailor need to be taught a lesson. i think sloth was trying to bash Woodpecker throughout this post for standing up and not taking flack.
i threw my disc in the middle of a lake on saturday. there were some kids canoeing and i asked them if they could get it for me. no problem they got it and i gave them each a buck. i had already gone swimming earlier and didnt want to do it again.
so because woodpecker took the easy route and had someone that was already in the water get his disc hes the villian? no thats messed up. the kid was a foul, greedy, retard from the sound of it and he got what he deserved. (except the disc)

W. might be thinking he was defending his friend's property from seizure by a punk kid. Not that he was "legal" as much as a vigilante, but dude. Isn't that why we all love superheroes? Didn't Bruce Wayne create Batman because he realized the law's inadequacy? The world needs more men with overzealous commitment to their principles. And maybe Woodpecker has found himself a nemesis now. Every good superhero needs a nemesis. If anybody has any artistic skill, maybe they can make a graphic novel out of this story: "The Woodpecker vs. Slime Boy."

Batman= cartoon character

And, no, all of us don't love superheroes. It takes 100% more balls to walk a kind path even when confronted with poor behavior than it does to react with aggression. WP would have been correct in his actions if the boy had stolen important medication, or endangered a life, or anything other than been a dick over some flying plastic. Sure, there's principle here, but anybody who is this heated up in a minor situation like this one is bound to make a major error in judgement while he "keeps it real" and hurt an innocent.

No Samurai ever would have behaved like WP. And that says everything.

I would have waterboarded the kid. j/k.

Principles are not by default a bad thing and without them there would be no justice as we understand it because no matter how many lawyers, police, soldiers there are you can't protect everyone all the time.

I think I said principles are a fine thing but there would be no justice if every small infraction like this discident was met with the heavy hand of the WP.

It's a sad story. The poor kid was willing to get dirty and help out a stranger for a couple of dollars which is more than most would do. In the process he finds a treasure worth much more than two dollars. When he refuses to sell that treasure for the measly sum of $3.00 he is threatened and bullied and basically has his new found property stolen from him.

Woodpecker, you need to buy a replacement disc and go the course every weekend until you find that kid and give him is disc back. That's the right thing to do and the only thing that will ever help that poor kid ever forget that tragic day.

What does it say about your judgement when you must ask others whether or not it was "a bad thing"?

IMO he's just letting us know. two kids at a movie theater were acting up and i gave them several warnings to be quiet. they failed to listen to me and i grabbed them by the ear and hulled them outside and gave them to the manager and said call there mother. told him what happened and when i came back several members of the audience cheered. i know some were not so happy but i needed to happen. sometimes just letting somebody know they had better listen is better but sometimes action is needed.

why do you think alot of us who have played for more than a year quit writing our name on our discs look at all this drama do we really go to the course to deal with all this crap i know i don,t i used to get mad about people not returning disc just like w.p. but ive gotten over that like the Queens say g.w.t.f. dosnt finding a disc help when losing a disc (ying yang ebb and flow) im glad some people like W.P. can have a heated discussion without name callin . for the love of the sport people please stop putting your names on your discs woudnt that be easier
