I'm bagging a 162g Star Tern that I use for max distance. I'm not getting it out very far tho, max d so far is about 105m, but typically I get less distance than that on a normal golf throw. Even tho I'm not throwing the Tern at light speed I'm still getting some turn out of it, and in a headwind I'm getting significant turn. I'm looking for something I can pair the Tern with for those headwind shots. How does the Champion Tern compare to the Star variant? What about the Wraith, how well would say a 165g Star Wraith handle headwinds for a noodle? What about the DDX? I'm open to other suggestions as well
I'm in the same situation as you are: I bag the Star Tern (about 167g) as my max-d disc. So I went through this process of deciding which overstable disc should compliment it. While it's still a work in progress, here are some ideas:
- A Hannah Leatherman Star Tern comes in heavier weights (mine are max wt.) and are more overstable than regular Star Terns fresh out of the box. They look good, and buying an HL Star Tern helps 2015 USWDGC Champion Hannah Leatherman's touring efforts. And it's a Tern, so you're throwing the same mold.
- I have a Factory Second Star Wraith that is 162g; a bit on the light side but it's still a Wraith and more overstable than the Tern. If you get a flippy Wraith, then you can use it to bomb in tailwinds, but a stable/overstable Wraith will get ya done.
- The Paul McBeth Champion Krait is more overstable than the Tern. I like it because it flies very straight then dump fades. My Krait is in the low 160s. I had one that was 147g or so, and it got flippy on me as my form and distance have improved.
- The Gold Line Flow from Lat64 is a Speed-11 disc similar to the Wraith. I like Gold Line plastic the best, so I'll often bag the Flow for times the headwinds pick up.
- Last idea: dropping down a notch, you might try the Starfire-L (SL). These only come in Pro now, as Star SLs are OOP, and you should send any Star SLs you find to me so I can give them a good retirement home.
Seriously, the SL is a great disc, and since theoretically the headwinds can give some lift, you might see if this disc fits your stable/overstable needs.
