Paul McBeth Is At His Highest Rating Ever

Paul could throw any brand and still be the best. . . BUT, it would be REALLY fun to see what he would throw if he was sponsored by something like Adidas and could throw any disc brand

Says the guy (formerly?) sponsored by Discraft. :\

No disputing Paul's happy with his Discraft discs, but he'd be putting up these kinds of ratings throwing any brand's plastic. He's just that good a player.

One could argue that the added pressure from the switch, whether the challenge of learning new plastic and/or dealing with naysayers, might have given him a boost in motivation. Paul seems to play well under pressure.

Sure. I'd even go so far as to say that simply the added practice of learning his new discs would have positive results, motivation or no motivation.

GOAT?

Just out of curiosity, what was Climo's highest rating?

Also, during the Ricky run in 2016 and 2017, how often was he rated higher than Paul?

Paul seemed to be the best until early 2016 but got it back the second half of 2018 until now...I watched his best round at Worlds in Vermont (when he took the lead in the second round at Brewster) and actually Udisc scored his first round of USDGC last year when he shot -13 (it was jungle hot in October)..

The guy is amazing...

Paul: Make this one just like the Thunderbird, make that one like the Destroyer and this one right here JUST like the Aviar.

Discraft: You got it, Paul!

And they have:

Luna, in stiff Jawbreaker for putting, and more premium plastic as the Nova replacement.

Anax replaces the Thunderbird.

Zeus replaces the Destroyer.

And then there's the Zone, which Innova never could successfully duplicate...

1043 in late 2006...at age 38. The true caveat being that for much of Climo's prime, there were no ratings. Who knows what 1997 Ken Climo, at the same age that McBeth is now, would have been rated as he won his seventh consecutive World title.

Also, during the Ricky run in 2016 and 2017, how often was he rated higher than Paul?

The last time Ricky had a higher rating than Paul was December 2013. In fact, Ricky was ahead of Paul for most of that year and it was the only time he has ever been the higher rated between the two. They also had the same rating in June/July last year but beyond that, Paul has been higher rated than Ricky throughout their careers.

Well, he never has put those up until now, so there's that.

Discraft has nothing like the Thunderbird. Vulture and Anax are too overstable compared.

The Luna is more stable than a beadless aviar.

Zeus and Destroyer are basically the same.

What do you think is the cap? Like 10 years from now, has anyone been rated 1060? 1065? 1070? Its got to stop somewhere, right?

To average 1070, you have to consistently shoot 1100 rated rounds.

The harder and longer courses get, which is the trend in the sport, the harder it will be to have insanely high ratings. It's nearly impossible to get to the 1100 figure on SSAs above 61 - 62.

I don't think anyone will ever get above 1065.

Kind of like how Tiger changed ball golf from a game for old white men to something with some real popularity.

Let's not discount Ricky, Eagle, and Simon either as all of these dudes are doing some insane stuff on the course and cool stuff off the course as well.

Ricky, Eagle, and Simon are pretty awesome as well. All doing excellent things from a PR standpoint.

Well... maybe not Franklin discs. ;)

Seriously, Paul is good enough archer that he can make most any arrows work. But some of the Discraft arrows...er, discs... seem to be right in his wheelhouse, especially the Zone and Luna (for throwing and putting).

Really that depends on what the standard deviation of your rounds is. More highly rated players means more opportunity to take higher ratings, so eventually that might happen but it's not realistic.

Since it takes 1060+ average to win most NT/Major/DGPT, I think 1065+ is realistic within a couple of seasons.
