Veterans Rude To Noobs

I'm always nice to the lamers. I even know a song to the tune of an old Monkeys song. Hey hey we're the lamers, we play in groups of 6 or 8..........

I forget the rest.

It really benefits me to be nice to everyone on the course. They are all potential disc buyers.

Last night I got a really nice bruise from an errant shot by a new player. I couldn't even get mad at him.

Be nice to all

As a newer player, I guess I'm lucky as I haven't experienced any issues. I always let people play through, especially in my "practice" rounds where I'll play more than one disc. I've also gone to great pains to teach my son course etiquette and for the most part he gets it too. Most of the more experienced course regulars have gotten to know us and very friendly towards my son, giving him tips and even offering him to try different discs.

The one thing that really got me the other night is a more experienced player whom had a few bottles of beer in his bag along with his discs was sort of teasing my son while he was practicing his drives. My son is very enthusiastic about the game and can get a little excited at times. But for the most part, he is very well behaved on the course. My son who is 9 has high functioning autism, luckily didn't notice, but I really wanted to clobber this guy.

"C*******s" you hear that a lot in this area. Its a shame because Cass Benton is a sweet course.
^agreed! cryin' shame too.

Too bad pay to play isn't a feasible option at that course... it could use a bit of maintenance and benefit from the presence of someone there just to dissuade some of the crap that goes on there. Really cleaned things up a lot at Kensington and Stony Creek - sure crap still happens, but with much less frequency. I just don't see that as a feasible option because of the way that place is set up.

It's funny that people always refer to the 'c*******s', since that is the one course I have never had to ask to play through on. In fact, I usually get asked to join in with the group I catch up to. I like playing with anyone who is having fun. I may throw out a little advice to somebody here and there if it is warranted, but not in a "I'm so much better than you..." kind of way.
I'd rather make the effort to educate than complain.

I have to say I love playing with new players because I give great advice that I often forget to take myself. When I explain to a new player that you don't need to put so much arm strength into your drives, I remember not to strong arm myself and usually have a much better round. When I play and compete with vets I forget my own advice and tend to try and showboat a little. It's probably why I've played two tag league tourneys and shot my two worst games in over a year while doing so...

I was out on the course the other day and slowly coming out of newbieness I showed my son and family how to let people play through. We were really taking our time so we let several groups play through as we went around the course. Actually had a couple come through and gave a few hints on disc selection. I seen that the wife had a high speed driver which was something like a 13 speed, forget the name, I told them to look at the buzzz and some slower drivers. I explained what speed meant so I think they got it and played through.
When I started playing again I found everyone really helpful in this area and nobody acting to bad. Heck, I even started a radio show and have found every pro to be great, even though they knew I was a newbie, and especially Terry Miller who has helped me out greatly with the radio show.

I really enjoy helping a noob who is wanting help. Last year at the DGCR Ohio meet we had a guy on our card the first round that had only been playing for a few months. Real nice guy and a lot of fun. It was him, RUSSELL, Bogeynomore and myself on the card. All 3 of us more experienced players were more interested in helping him over worrying about our score.
I know we all helped him. After he got home he sent me a PM telling me they stopped and played a round on the way home and he got his first deuce. That was really great because during the round we played he got his first 3 ever.

A week ago I got to a course the same time a young guy drove up. I offered to let him play first so I wouldn't hold him up but he asked to play along. He was throwing meat hooks when we started but was asking a lot of questions. He said it was the first time he met anyone who knew how to play and loved the help. On hole #18 we both parked our drives. His shot was more of an accident but he did it because he was starting to understand a few things. That was cool to see.

I had something happen to me a while back, maybe 2 months ago.Hope you like stories.

I've been playing for 13 years now and I'm by all means not a newer player.I had to take a year off due to a shoulder injury and in that time the course manager and maintenance job changed hands. The old man moved away and a bunch of younger guys took over.I had seen them out on the course a few times while I was slowly getting back to form, but I didn't know them. There are 6 of them that are pretty much part of the new management.

Now I use to play in Tournaments and Doubles Tournaments and I have won a few as well.Since my injury I've been waiting until I was 100% before I started to play again in tournaments.

I had just gotten to the course went through my warm-ups and putting practice.I proceed to hole one and they are getting ready to start a Doubles tournament. The main guy in charge asked me if I was gonna play,I told him I wasn't 100% still and wanted to give it a few more months before I played.4 of the 6 guys that help with the course management then proceed to tee off on hole one to get some practice.I give them a nod to say hello as they walk up the trail and they nod back.

When they get up there the guys start throwing 2 to 3 discs each for their upshots and then when they get up to putt they throw the same amount of putts. Now after they get done putting, they start to practice their putts right on hole one.

I'm starting to get angry, they know I"m down here and they keep practice putting.5 more minutes go by and then it happens,I snap.I then said,in a very loud and angry as a hornet voice,"GD it what the hell are you guys doing".They grabbed their stuff and went to the side.I threw my shot and when I got up there(mind you I was angry)I told them if they want to practice they need to go to the parking lot where the practice basket is.You guys have a whole lot of room out there to do your practice.Isn't that what a practice basket is for?I couldn't keep my mouth shut so I told them Just because you guys are part of the course management now doesn't give you the right to hog a hole, there are newer players who come out here and sometimes families. If they see people like you staying up here and hogging a hole, they may not want to come back.

As I proceeded to go to the next hole I heard one of them murmur something to the other one.It sounded like they cussed me,but it could have been anything.I snapped again.I took the trail down from hole 2 to get back to the practice basket.I talk to one of the 6 guys in charge and said put me down for the doubles tournament. The guy said,"what changed your mind?".Well,I'm going to teach 4 guys on hole 1 a lesson that they will never forget.

Ok we draw cards I get my partner,a new guy but even though I was angry I was nice to this guy and taught him a lot of stuff while we were playing. He was making some shots that he said he has never been able to make before. So it felt good being able to help out.

At the end of the tournament me and my partner ended up shooting -14 under and the next group shot -7 under.Needless to say none of those guys spoke to me after the tournament.I went and took my money, shook my partners hand and told him it was great playing with him. Before he let me go he asked me how I got this good.I said well I've learned a lot in my 13 years of playing but today I was playing a little bit over my head.I was here to teach some guys a lesson. He laughed,I laughed and then I went on my way.

^^ I've experienced similar attitude from younger players because of my age. Until I start beating their arse in golf. :D
I think the younger golfers need to understand that an old man carrying a bag has most probably been playing for a long time and understands how things work...or are supposed to work.

Great story. Justice served. I hope you didn't blow out your shoulder teaching those DB's a lesson

Never happens around here. But that is maybe one of the benefits of < 150 people playing in switzerland. Everybody is happy about every new face and if anything, people are too overwhelming with their help offers.

Yeah us old guys know a thing or two.

So you took 2nd place with a 14 over par?

No man,we shot -14 under par and 2nd place was -7 under par.We beat 2nd place by 7 strokes.

sorry for the confusion.

I will admitt that cass has a unique feature in that i can always find a group to throw with or hang with.
However mr smooth, i think it will just be a matter of time before you see what others speak of.
I know just about all the usual folks out there so i know what im getting myself into when i join. The problem is how confrontational these young guys are out there. Ive never seen violence as a possibility on any coirse besides cass.

he was making a joke about your double negative. -14 and 14 under are the same thing, so -14 under is actually +14 or 14 over.

Us Americans thrive on conflict while you Swiss cower in fear. Conflict produces greatness. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
