Brainwave-Like Disc Dyeing

Added some blue. The picture makes it look a little worse.

Then here is my ring attempt....

It is understandable.... dude was making a living by being the best and probably only person getting the brainwaves.

Does anybody know how he was getting these dyes to come out...

I'm guessing that he was using a potters wheel.... or a record player. His color of dye is way brighter than any of the brainwave-like dye I have seen. I am still wondering what dye he was using.

Hey, that one's in my garage!

For me, the ring is a less is more type of thing. The less mix out there, the less likely for the mix to go towards the center. Also, I used SC for mine.... I don't know if that makes a difference. Can't wait to get some more dyes down. I'm going to see how it takes on a couple of wizards in a couple days. I think that I'm going to order some iDye poly tonight. The colors just look brighter than the RIT.

Edit: also on my ring, I used a super flat surface (pepsi box squished flat).... that way I didn't have any edges to bump into.

I tried this out and i got a few waves, but all of the waves were like filled in by the other dye. I put it in the toaster in hopes this dye would evaporate but it didnt work, suggestions?image.jpg

Add more soap to your mixture, it helps to reduce the background haze, also, maybe try a bit less dye/sc/soap mix on the disc, but your dye-strength looks good. I've had haze issues with star plastic; it takes the dye so quickly that the swirling motion in the pan can be enough to generate that background haze.

Getting closer.... my wife's JLS.... took the dye well. I think I had too much acetone, though. About to order some iDye poly for brighter colors... and maybe pick up a convection oven at goodwill if I can find one. :D

And I tried to do it on a SSS wizard... with little luck. The colors didn't really pop even though I heated it with a blow dryer a couple of times. Strangely.... it only dyed blue waves.... even though I had green, red, and blue in the pan. The waves that should have been red or green turned blue. Kind of hard to see in this pic:

There is certainly a trial and error learning curve associated with this process, Jeff was an artist, with a well refined set of techniques, to say the least

I'm convinced Jeff did NOT use any SC. His dyes were soap and rit based, it is evident in the shapes(specifically the edges) of his waves...

Quite possible. I don't think he "heated" them in any way either. JMO

No you're correct, he cured them overnight in a closet with racks; but who knows what was in the closet, perhaps a dehumidifier or a heat lamp?

I'm way too impatient to wait all night, I need that instant gratification, lol.

Where do you guys order your iDye poly from? I need brighter colors.

Also, it looks like Jeff's later works were with a more florescent dye... very bright and vivid colors.

Vinegar was mentioned before... do you think that Jeff was maybe using vinegar in place of water?

Good luck! Maybe you'll have some luck on that Z plastic.

we shall see! i wasnt exact about anything. I did straight dye into a lil dropper bottle and added acetone to it, no water, no nothin lol. and put some drops into the shaving cream bed to mix it. So heres to hoping that it works haha  I figure Ill rinse it in the morning. Im not baking it either.

Not only did Mr Ash have yeeeears of experience, but im imagining the sheer amount of discs he practiced on is far more than most people even OWN or have owned. (with of course the exception of some on here)
