Oh, I don't blame ya, the Avenger SS is a great disc, I just never threw it once I could push my gazelle out as far as I can now. If I come across another though, I'll be sure to hit you up
Thanks for the kind words. I beat Alan Layh last year and he beat me this year. I made him play his best to win and he came through. He deserved it.
As far as the course goes, it definitely helps to play here a few times to develop strategies, lines, etc. Playing two rounds in a day can be taxing at the Castle.
It was nice to meet you, too. If you ever decide to come down again, let me know and maybe I can get some guys together to play the course.
Bro D is an enigma wrapped in a mystery, he'll only be somewhere definitively if he says as much. (I would have definitely watched the Sat. rounds if that crazy storm didn't come in).
I'm not exactly "back." I've just been online for a few days while I fix my bro's laptop and use his internet, lol. I'm doing quite fantastic though! I'll have a better job soon I hope, (putting in applications SUCKS!) But, I have money to pay bills, just not a constant flow of money. So I can't really afford much right now. XD
Nope, I wasn't there. Saturday I was in Leland with friends and Sunday I went and played Kure Beach instead.
Castle Hayne is one of those courses that greatly behooves you if you can throw a putter well and far, it makes up for a lot of bad drives. Either way, it always kicks my butt the first couple of rounds on it when I come back to play it and I basically learned to play there so don't feel too bad.
Ouch. I know those Sat. rounds couldn't have been much fun with all that wind. I ended up staying in Leland and getting wasted, playing cards, and having fun with my buddy's 2-3 year old. Cute little bastard.
I'm surprised your Sun. rounds were worse though, you must have been thinking/trying too hard. But yeah, it's definitely a course you should warm up and scout before you play. My buddy Drew placed 2nd in the Intermediates! Said that a major sandbagger beat him, oh well.
Winds don't affect The Castle the way it affects places like Richlands. Mostly it will affect putting on #4, #12, #16, #17. You may face some headwinds driving on #3, #6, #11, #14, #17, #18. As far as the the rains go, I don't throw Champ/Z plastic. Overall, I don't anticipate changing my bag at all. However, I will bring some extra plastic, in case I change my mind for the second round.
Wanted to let you know I will be within 1 hour of charlotte the last week in may if you are interested in hooking up for a round or 2. Looking to play as many courses as possible on this roadtrip. Maybe hook up with the Hatchet although she has not returned my calls recently. Let me know.
Castle Hayne is the epitome of a course where you can let it beat up on the field while you just work for par every time. You'd be in very good shape if you just played a conservative approach game and take birdies when they come while letting the comp. be ambitious and get bogeys. Most of the holes are fairly easy to par except for #14, #3, and maybe #6. #1, #2, #9 and maybe #12 are the birdie or die holes.
I might ride down there just to hang with my homeys.
You asked about the Mako.
Anything that will fly predictably straight and not skip is a must for The Castle. People, especially people who lack distance, use drivers way too often. If you can depend on your Mako, use it off as many tees as you possibly can.
As for advice on The Castle,
The Castle is a long course that puts a premium on accuracy. Leave the drivers to the guys who can use them. Keep it low and straight. If you can get 150'-200' straight with any disc, that's the one you want to use. Play it safe and go for pars and bogies. Know your limits.
At The Castle, you're more likely to be hurt by "going for the birdie" than if you lay it up and play it safe and go for the par.
Again, if you have a fairway driver or mid-range or putter that is infinitely predictable, use it and let everyone else play from the woods. Stay in the open.
The fastest thing I carry is a Pro TL. I throw a driver from the tee on only 6 of 18 holes.
Hope this helps.
