I started playing in college in '03 as a junior. Played in recreational leagues and on traveling teams (male and co-ed) until '08 or so. I ran multiple leagues during this time and served on a executive board for an ultimate organization, so I was in pretty deep. Quit because 1) the game had become a lot more aggressive with the influx of athletes from other sports which, in turn, led to more "incidental" contact and 2) I learned that I hate team sports. I am also slow, short, and lacking in jumping ability, so wrong skill set for the game.
A guy I played with (who I have seen listed in some disc golf tourney results) would invite us all out to tournaments but I never really considered disc golf. Didn't start playing dg until '15.
People have commented that my ultimate background shows through in my form, in not a good way. There are some shots, as a lefty, that transfer effectively over from ultimate, like a forehand anhyzer upshot.
