The ultimate question is, is this a top ten list of discs you feel have bettered your game, bettered your perception of the game, discs that have altered the sport, and or discs that are seemingly the most popular?
We have gone through these lists before, several from the different perspectives mentioned above, but hell, this is for fun. So, here is my top ten compiled the best I can based upon what I have thrown and I believe are the best after taking everything into consideration.
1) Heavy Gold Line River - This disc alone through its magical properities of perfect stability and glide overnight convinced me to stop worrying about maximum distance and throwing the fastest discs on the market. Instead the River had me working on shaping lines, staying in the fairway, and throwing a more balanced game.
2) Lighter and slightly beaten Star Teebird - This was actually the first fairway driver I gave a chance when I tried the whole discing-down movement. I was rock-solid with this disc and likely would not have given the River a try if this Teebird had not flown so well but unfortunately taken some damage.
3) Opto Halo - While it is not in my bag because I gave the Z Nuke the nod, it is the Halo's combination of speed, glide, stability, and maximum distance potential that reignited my love affair with all things Latitude 64.
4) Z Nuke - Mastering this disc helped me clean up my form, showing me that I do not need to rely on overstable brutes like the Boss to achieve maximum open field distance. While I have moved to using the Pro Destroyer for flat out open field distance, my Z Nukes are completely reliable on any distance line I need and I do trust them into the wind.
5) Cryztal Buzzz - Such a perfection combination of everything, and throw on top of it that yellow Cryztal is nearly impossible to lose. The only reason it is not in my bag is because I am using two versions of the Roc to cover more of a stability range. The Buzzz pairs well with the Hornet, but since I am also using the Drone, that would make my bag a little overstable heavy.
6) Star Ontario Roc - It is a little harder to find, but not too bad. It provides the stability most people try for when they beat in their DX and KC Pros but gives you the higher durability of the Star plastic. I like them despite others prefering to season softer Rocs; all I can say is to each their own, paired with the Star San Marino Roc they cover almost every shot I need without having to worry about changing my grip.
7) Z Drone - Overstable goodliness. Even though it does not see much play, just having it in the bag and knowing what it can do is an incredible security blanket.
8) Pro Pig - It has enough glide when powered to reassure me that it will be predictable, can handle it, and be true even when I suddenly lose confidence in my putting.
9) SSS Wizard - This is my second time through with the Wizard and this time I think I have found the niche it excels at. When I used it strictly as a putter I could never find the right combination of aim and power. I always dinked it against the cage or flew past on the right. However, when using it for longer putts that I deem my chances slim anyway or for approaches I want to take a run at the basket with, the great feel of the Wizard and perfect neutral stability has greatly improved that part of my game.
10) X-Link Ridge - Its story is similar to my Wizards. As a true putter it was less than spectacular. Yet when I gave it the role of approaches and running the basket and learned what it can do, that part of my game instantly got better. In fact, it probably is now the best part of my game, which then in turn reduces the pressure of having to make the perfect drive, which in turn helps me to drive better.
Honorable mentions:
Star Archon
Gold Line Striker
150g Z Flick
Echo Star Wraith
FLX Buzzz
Champion Ape
Star Valkyrie
and the following discs once beaten in:
Star Boss
Champion and Pro Destroyer
X-Link Ascent (especially during the winter)
Opto Trident (for thumbers)
