When should you move to pro?

I'm not sure I like where this thread is going. Back to talking about how Paul should move up! so it's easier for me to win advanced around here...

Lure him into accepting cash in an event he doesn't know is sanctioned . . . I think I saw it on an episode of Seinfeld or something.

Sorry for talking trash about your people of walmart Aunt, scott

I'll work on that...

whiz, I've played with you over here a couple of years ago. And I must admit that I thought you should have been playing Open back then. You may not have won a whole lot then but you would've been learning and be winning at this point. Thus this thread may have never happened.

With that being said, you should just play Open and call it a day.

They can! Nothing is stopping them. But that's not your beef is it? Your OPINION is that certain players NEED to play up for some reason . . . that they should be forced to play OPEN based on your perception of their abilities.

See a problem here?

nope

If your scorecard says you are playing with the pros, ... then play with the pros.

I believe that a move to pro should be up to the player. I don't care how many tourneys they win if they want to be an Am forever its up to them. If a ball golfer wins or competes well at the US amateur championship they are pressured or forced to go pro. No one should ever be forced to go pro in any sport, if they want to play for the love of the game and merch instead of $ then by all means they should do it.

Bingo.

I think a lot of people find that there is also a greater lack of familiarity/sportsmanship in the open division. It is more cutthroat when people are playing for their livelihoods and some pros take it way too seriously. Some people just have more fun playing with other amateur players.

the top of advanced is where the worst sportsmanship is most likely to lie in any given tourney according to my experience.

i'll move to open when hell freezes over, not sure if that helps you.

other than lower entry fees what is the incentive to not move up? 996 rating and 4th at am worlds doesn't leave a lot to be accomplished in advanced imo. eventually continuing to play advanced becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where the only positive outcome is actually winning every event.

for what it's worth i don't believe anyone should be forced to "go pro".

News Alert:

You can be an AM forever, sure, but you are not always going to play at a level that competes with the best in the world forever. Injuries and age add up, while younger, more dedicated competition grows. Moving to the open division will not always be an option to you. You take advantage of the moments you have in life, succeed or fail, at least try.

Not a bad point, but that's a good reason for someone to choose to move up, not a good reason for people to be forced to move up (coming from a low level advanced player who donates to those top level ams).
