[Other] The DGCR Mold: Let's build a disc!

I didn't like the Rattl'r because it was too deep dish for me and didn't glide as well as a Polecat. It felt like a small diameter Ultrastar which was weird. I don't mind rounded shoulders though, I kind of even like the Putt'R. Squared off vs rounded is not a deal breaker for me, my grip likes them all as long as it's not real deep. I like the fastback rings too, lol. Heck, put some JuJu divots on there for all I care. So yeah, a thumbtrac Polecat with rings and Juju divots sounds good. :|

All I care about is: Glide, fairly small diameter (The Beetle coming out is 21.9cm, will be bigger than the Polecat (21.3) so I'm interested about that. The Gopher (22.9) is probably as big as I'd be interested in). Yeah, 22cm is kind of a big void in the lid world, this could be interesting. The Beetle might be the low end representative, the Zeppelin was 22.1 but never got produced (heard good things about them though). A squared off Zeppelin could be neat.

Here's some fairly common diameters:

Putt'R: 21.0
Birdie: 21.2
Rattler: 21.2
Polecat: 21.3
Upshot: 21.6
Beetle(?): 21.9
Sonic: 21.6
Zeppelin: 22.1
Bite: 22.6
Big Dog/Doggy Style: 22.6
Gopher: 22.9
Hero Disc Type 235: 23.7
Zephyr: 24.1

I've never seen a Doggy Style or Bite, did anybody like those for disc golf or did they seem more suited for catch discs?

Sorry, no experience with the Doggy Style or the Bite. I have used other dog discs and they do okay. I imagine the Bite is in the same category.

I didn't do the Zeppelin Ace Race... what was that one like?

Like you, I had thought about Sinus divots or similar. That way we could give a "Thumtrac" to those who want it and a rounded shoulder to those who don't. In theory we could get more glide since we stayed away from the Thumtrac.

^^I like the diameter of the Bite personally. The rest of the disc feels a little clunky (for lack of a better term) to me, almost like the depth-to-diameter-to-rim shape is out of proportion somehow.

The Zeppelin has a beveled edge, so it's not a true lid. It's basically a wide diameter, floaty, point and shoot putter. And the Pro D is 10X better than the ESP version. Darn shame it didn't go into production.

Bite has a weird shape for sure but compared to my other dog discs, you can really mash on one.

agreed on both counts.

it's pretty fast and low profile with a decent amount of stability as far as a dog disc goes, but ZERO glide from my experience.

the big dog or doggy style, whatever it was i had, was pretty awesome. glidey enough, stable enough. perfect for finesse shots. but no, i wouldn't say anybody besides myself enjoys them for disc golf.

What we think we're making:

What we end up with:

I like the doggy style in lighter weights but it can be touchy. In heavier weights the doggy style loses some float and is not as neutral.
Is there a name yet? I nominate Sloth or Tree Sloth.

Oh. I had been firmly in the woodcock camp. And think that's a great choice.

But I would buy TONS of cycleable stiff baseline (KC Pro Style) Gazelles. Speed 6 moderately overstable fairway please. (Although they will be awfully close to the Gila, I'd imagine.)

i appreciate you appreciating this idea sir.

This isn't an RDG mold though.

I'm simply an idea guy who thinks this would be cool.

This is a DGCR mold. Approved with DGCR as the manufacturer. RDG will have no connection other than being a sponsor for the project.

Has anyone even asked the brass @ dgcr if this is even of interest lol

I think all people want is a Innova polecat in Gateway plastics... done

No thanks. I dont want a PC replica at all. That's why i went more upshot #1 on it. Way better true lid really. Lighter kittys are on the same level but... Yeah

Well, we're sticky-worthy so that means something, right?

Interesting... I found an old one of these at a PIAS this weekend and used it in place of my Polecat and it was virtually the same (except for the ribs on the inside rim), but it did have more glide. I like it.

So I looked it up and the Upshot was approved a year before the Polecat. (2/93 VS 1/94)
Now I kind of want to give an homage to the originator of the disc golf lid even more.
I like where your head is at on this one Aim.

Nice find! Had no idea. If people are wondering the current run of plastic is great at GGGT and you can get xouts or regs for super cheap.

Im seriously going to make a lightning bag next time i go there. I have 2 MVPs to pick up instore i forgot about so will be going down soon.

Upshot > polecat

yes.
Several people have donated discs and I am scanning them. This should help me understand weight allocation and geometries.
When I have some concepts to share I will post to one of these threads.

So there's no visible progress as far as DGCR can tell, but its all behind the scenes progress. Hopefully it won't be that much longer 
