Can it be???

It'll be interesting to see how many folks make the trip to visit the new course on the scene that's even farther north and in an even more remote location than Flip. I know I'll make the trip at some point, probably early next summer. I'm already looking forward to it.

..I wouldn't really call Highbridge the new kid on the scene, seeing how they have already hosted Worlds. The more people I play with on the pro side of things the more I realize that MANY MANY skilled people have no idea about this site.

It's new to the top 10 on this site, that's all I meant.

Flip does have more crappy reviews than any other course, that's true, but it also has a 5.00 ranking from eight trusted reviewers which is higher than the average of the other folks who've reviewed it (4.877). Idlewild is the same way, 17 TRs for a 4.92 average versus a 4.88 from other folks. My theory is that Idlewild gets more TRs because it's centrally located (compared to west michigan) and is probably playable for a couple more months out of the year.
I've said this once, and I'll probably say it again a thousand times...

The criteria for becoming a trusted reviewer on here, particularly at the Bronze level, is a joke.

All you need is 10 reviews, and 50 helpful votes from 10 unique people. Some people have gotten more than half the necessary total for bronze TR status off of a single review. This too needs to change. A single review should count for five helpful points max. That way you have to get five helpful points from at least ten different reviews. Under the current system people can get cheap helpfuls by reviewing popular courses or ones in areas with a lot of DGCR members, even if they incur a few negatives in the process.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I don't understand why you're trying to imply that either Flip or Idlewild or any of the top 10, for that matter, aren't worthy of the praise they've received. If folks who travel hours upon hours to play these courses (like me) didn't think highly of them after playing they wouldn't be in the top 10 anymore.
The thing is, I suspect most of the reviews on here are not from people who have traveled hours and hours. I'll bet most of them are from a reveiwer who lives within 100 miles of the course. I took all 57 of Flips reviews and crunched them into a spreadsheet. Here's what I found.

- 25 of the 57 reviewers have listed that they've played less than 10 courses. If someone has played that few, and has such a small frame of reference, how do they know what a five star course is?
- The average number of courses played was 27.8. This drops to 17.7 when you only take the middle 60%.
- The average playing experience is listed at 8.23 years. Of course 21 of the 57 reviewers did not list their playing experience, and the formula does not count the ones who did not list their experience.
- Of those who did not list their playing experience, all but six of them have five or fewer courses listed as played, which would imply that their experience isn't much and would likely drag the average down much further.

And I'm not picking on Flip here, as pretty much every course that has been reviewed significantly has this problem to some degree. Its just the most glaring example of what's wrong.

If there's something I'd like to see added to people's reviews, its the distance range between the reviewer's home zip code and the course's zip code. This would help distinguish which reviews are from travelers and which are from locals.

interesting stats scarp. thanks.

i think one thing that hasn't been taken into account by people who think 10 reviews is too few: if a course only has 10 reviews, 1 bad review will severely punish it's average. 10 locals can all give it a 5 but if two people give it a 3, the avg goes down to 4.6!

it's way easier to deflate a biased rating when the course has fewer reviews and i think this will happen naturally, especially if an undeserving course makes it into the top 10.

also, looks like i have to plan a new road trip

speaking of which, anyone know what sort of accommodations are nearby? with 5 courses to play, i'm gonna need a couple days to take it all in. are there campgrounds around anywhere or is it a hotel in the nearest town?

Camping at Highbridge is onsite. Otherwise, the closest motel is just under 30 minutes away either north in Ashland or east towards Whitecap/Hurley. The Bad River Casino just east of Ashland is where many stayed and had a good time during Worlds with good nightly rates.

looked it up and apparently there is one right nearby in Mellon too.

that's way cooler that there is camping onsite though. who needs a shower more than once every half a dozen rounds anyway...

Showers on the entry-level floor and basement of the Honka House!...not like I even bothered using them while up there, what with being distracted by more important things...

Try 30 as a min. # of reviews and hit review 3X 2 get them in order (High to low).
How many courses have a 4 or above? What courses are they?

When I did that I got a whole lot of Colorado...which makes me think there are more DGCR members in CO and not particularly better courses...though the courses look great!

Colorado, while not being a "Disc Golf State" at this point is working hard to become so. There are many amazing mountain courses here that will literally blow your mind. I say that in comparison to even such greats as DeLaveaga. There are certainly some really bad courses here as well but as far as a place that is growing in Disc Golf and will become a powerhouse in the near future, look no further than Colorado. And most of the people from Colorado on here I would say rate their courses very fair. We might love Beaver Ranch but that is because it is literally the best course that most if not all of us have played.

I say this having lived in So Cal for more of my disc golf career than I have lived in Colorado.

One single 3 disc review and blue ribbon is out of the top 10 . . man my luck is no good first i head to Mn to play bryant lake and blue ribbon pines and bryant lake is gone before i get home and blue ribbon is gone before i got to write my review!

I can't believe someone gave i a 3, but it is an opinion. I am starting to understand what happens in the top 10 now after paying attention to them now. I didnt think about them before because i hadnt played it, but now that I have I will watch what happens.

Just an interesting sidenot to the highbridge flip city top 10 debate!

well when you have people that only like certain courses (I.E. short, slat, no woods) that rate everything super low because its not how they like it. the reviews are only like 10 words long too.
