East Coast Wooded Monsters

I think we should do basketball teams not football.:)

No deal.

But then does SC even know how to spell basketball?

Yes, but we capitalize Football.

It's an interesting place, disc-golf-wise. Sandwiched between Charlotte & Augusta, and running way behind. Until 2-3 years ago, Columbia only had 2 courses. Things are just starting to pick up. So no Wooded Monsters, no monsters at all, though Stoney Hill does have some teeth.

Funny you asked!!

Sontag is a very tough course.

Tell us about the mountain lake course. I want to play there but they just scheduled a tournament the same weekend as the Hawk Hollow event. I hope you have the time of your life.

I just finished a review of Mtn Lake for those that want to know. Overall it is really good, and a beautiful place. Now for the story I didn't put in the review...

As I was heading to the pad for #9 a little white Honda CRV drives down the dirt road to the left. A guy waves and I notice ladders on top of the car and a bunch of stuff piled in the back. I figured they were there to work on something. I keep playing and come back out of the woods to hole 11. Then I do a double take as I notice an extremely nice looking blonde lady in a bikini posing on a rock wall as the guy takes pictures. As a red blooded male I sneak a few peaks, think some dirty thoughts and walk on to the pad for 12. Well, as I throw my approach to 15 a few minutes later I notice the Honda still there. 15's basket is pretty darn close to the old stone building and posing blond.

I go to make my putt, and look up. And what does Sloppydisc see you ask?? Nice looking blonde gal in all her natural glory posing on the wall. Needless to say I shanked the heck out of that 8' putt. But man it was worth it. I almost gave Mtn Lake a 5 disc rating just for the really hot naked blond chick. Never thought I'd see something like that on a course. :D. I'll bet that photographer and young lady didn't plan on a road tripping disc golfer.

No I did not approach hot naked chick and photographer. No I didn't take pictures. And no I wasn't invited to film a porno. I just went on my way and finished my round.

I have played Nevin, Tyler, Renny and Hornets Nest and would say Tyler or Renny would be the toughest one mentioned from the longs but I think the WR Jackson is the toughest in terms of woods. Several holes on Jackson come to mind such as #'s 6, 8, 10, 15 and 17.

A man's got to know his limitations. She was several levels over my pay grade. Plus my wife and I have a one strike policy. I try to honor that promise.

The thought of a wooded monster that "easily beats OC" makes me simultaneously giggle with delight and shiver in fear. That's gotta be one hardcore course.

I think the best I've done on Orange Crush was +5 or 6. The best I've done on Lucky 8 was +14 or 15 I believe. And I was playing decent with that score.

I've posted on another thread about his par 6 too. It's legit. Somewhere around 700 feet, in the shape of a giant 7, a left hand mando, a double mando, and all heavily wooded. Johnny's said to people "If you get a 4 on it, I'll change it to a par 5." So far it's still a par 6. Yet through all this, it never really felt unfair. It was designed by a world champion afterall.

I feel the same about Orange Crush, and it's one of my favorite things about the course: as tough as it is, it never seems unfair to me. It's a testament to the course designers.

This course sounds pretty awesome. I'm average on a good day, so I might need to build my game up a bit before playing it, but it's on the dream course list at this point.

I would also add Castle Hayne near Wilmington, NC and Buckhorn near Raleigh.
Castle Hayne is not quite a gold level par, but it is a tough 64 par layout, all in the woods. Buckhorn has a couple of water carries that add to the difficulty.
Havne't played Castle Hayne, but I wouldn't put Buckhorn into this category. I dunno, maybe it's due to how often I play it...but I go there for a relaxing round...even though the longs do make it much harder...I dunno...something about it just doesn't make it fall into this category for me.

I do think Houck wants Rock Ridge to fall into this class of course though...whew. Just a little more work and it'll be complete. After that, it just needs to get beat in a bit so it doesn't have that "safari golf" feel. I feel like I need to play that course with a machete right now...

I wouldn't call Castle Hayne a wooded monster. A monster maybe, but not necessarily of the wooded variety.

yea Rock Ridge is really shaping up now, i'd say the rest of the work is minor. it's a very demanding course but i wouldn't put it in the monster category, the longs aren't even over 7,000ft. the par 3's aren't easy but they're not long, just technical.

Castle Hayne should definitely not be in this category, it should have it's own weird category because there aren't to many courses like it. that's part of the reason i love it so much i think.

Maybe 10 years ago castle hayne would have been called this but a lot of trees either fell due to Mother Nature or people cutting them down to make holes easier

When I think of wooded Monster, I dont think of Basil Marella in Rochester tight. Fair but long and wooded. Wouldnt consider Renny in this. Half the holes are in the open on the gold course. Castle Hayne more wooded wouldnt be a monster, it would just be a great course with too many trees.

Iron Hill is the gold standard for wooded monster. I'd probably have a better perspective 3 years later than I last played it...but at the time I did, I saw little room to mess up and very few short birdies if any.

Nevin is on the fringe, 2,7,13,15 are all pretty short. Although this time next year, #2 will be a par 4!

I am trying to decide of Idlewild is on the East Coast. Because of the way the US curves west as you go South... Idlewild is basically the same lattitude as Charlotte even though it feels Midwest.

I see what you're saying, as KY is one of those transitions states. One state below you're in the South, just north Ohio is in the Midwest, and one state east and you're in the east coast. I'd call it a Midwest state if anything. Or you can group it as "Appalachia"
